Excellent result. Quite clear that tactically Vieira doesn't want Edouard and Mateta as a front two at the same time, but prefers to play them off each other, thus I presume keeping them hungry for the starters spot. How they take this we will see as the season develops.

For anyone unaware or in doubt, today is a day you can be immensely proud to be a palace fan, relax a bit and dream of what may be.

We were supreme, leagues above Villa and could of scored 5+.

TBF we do have super Pat Vieira.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Mate it’s a squad game now more than ever with the 5 subs - players will have to get used to it..!!!

Great result - no-one likes to see Gerrard crying in his beer for the second time in a week because of the Palace…!!!

We looked great today and tbh we could have had 5-6 goals. Hughes should have scored at the end and the Edouard offside was so marginal.

Looking forward to seeing a game where Eze, Zaha and Olisé all start.

I wish Edouard had been in the middle for that brilliant Mitchell cross when Mateta scored because I suspect he (or anyone really) would have scored. I think Edouard needs a bit of confidence.

Absolutely brilliant display despite going 1-0 down

Well done Ayew, Eze, Wilf, Edouard and Dioucure, but everyone was great

At the moment I think Mateta is a better striker than Edouard. Overall, though, bringing him in fresh in the final 30-40 minutes, may increase our chances of scoring goals rather than playing him from the start.

I'm surprised by how many posters think the manager's choice of starters is based on "Who are my best 11 players?" rather than "What tactics give my team the best chance to win this game?" or, beyond that, "to win the most games this season."

I'm well happy with that win and all the positive comments.

Same 3 fixtures last season = 3 points, 4 goals for, 5 against.
This season = 4 points, 4 for, 4 against.

We are ahead!

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

There was a point at 2:1 where it occurred to me that it was a very Patrick Vieira 2021/2022 performance. Ie, be the better side, make lots of chances, but only have a 1 goal lead and eventually concede around 88 minutes.

Thankfully, we got the third goal.

They did still hit the bar, and had a real chance with a header at the end.

I think they're a bit s***. But that first 20 minutes was end to end. We are going to have some exciting games, that is for sure.

Currently we're tenth. This would be the ideal minimum finish, but we really do need more depth in the squad, especially now teams can replace half their outfield.

Eze and Zaha were f***ing good today. I think Zaha is joint top scorer in the league. This will be Wilf's best ever season with Palace.

Special mention for Mitchell's early ball into the box for Mateta, pin point and direct, outstanding!

I did think exactly the same. I can imagine everyone on the bench celebrating except for one guy sat there with a forced smile on his face.
