Why are you waffling on about slavery? It has no bearing on the irrationality of removing statues. Neither does it alter the fact that mass immigration is at the heart of yet another issue that we now have that we happily lived without before. No one alive was involved with African slavery, and those people who benefited did it legally until it was halted. No one alive can take any credit for that either. Erasing history will change nothing and moreover, it is bonkers to retrospectively condemn people, and their statues, for doing something that was legal and accepted by most in their day. What we think now has no bearing on their deeds. It all happened several lifetimes ago. Get a grip. If only you could read I made it clear I have no desire to erase history, quite the opposite I just can see why people object to having a statue of a slave trader looking down upon them all self important like. They should be items of curiosity in a museum not icons of our great cities. How about if it were a modern slaver? Say one who manipulates asylum seekers into the sex trade but is not caught doing anything illegal. Is that still fine? Edited by Mapletree (03 Apr 2022 10.42pm)

The original poster may not be aware but Glasgow has a complex relationship with slavery; indeed Glasgow University recognises that whilst it never enslaved people or traded in slaves, it did receive significant financial support from people whose wealth came from slavery. The university has stated that it regrets this historic association with slavery and as a result created a centre for the study of slavery and a memorial at the university for the enslaved. To me, there response was admirable - recognise the past but put the focus on education and the enslaved. In passing, I wonder if anyone on here has ever been to Goree - an island very close to Dakar in Senegal where one Patrick Vieira comes from. It was the largest slave trading centre in Africa for 5 centuries and is now a world heritage site reminding the world of human exploitation and acting as a sanctuary for recognition. It is a thoroughly sobering experience so well worth a visit. The original poster is very aware that to gaslight Livingstone is a pompous and absurd view, it is virtue signalling of the highest order IMHO.
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

Apologies for what? Something people did over a 200 odd years ago. That being the case why arnt Germans forever begging forgiveness, I mean that was less than 100 years ago.

Erm, because the thread is about slavery? The root of your approach seems to be that if people object to a statue of someone or something, they have a right to tear it down. As someone or other will object to absolutely any statue, we might as well take them all down to avoid the civil disturbances.
