The British Government(s) always knew it was about this (the contract for tanks). Why they just didn't pay up what they owed, rather than waste 6 years of someone's life is beyond me.
The press were starting to dig deep about this and something was going to be published, so that's what has forced the Government's hands.

Pleased it's over for her, but disgusted by the way it was handled by UK Government.

I think it was put into the 'too hard' bin. For sure it was a debt that was owed but also Iran was on the sanctions list and there was a genuine fear that the money could fund activities dangerous to our interests. The 'too hard' bin in my opinion is there largely due to the way in which the politicians are rotated, nobody has to properly carry the can and nobody really cares enough.

We had a simple choice of honouring our obligations over the order, Iran have been completely in the right this whole affair.

The debt should have been paid and none of this would have happened it would have been forgotten.

The UK likes to lecture about the rule of law and adhering to contracts but in reality it is as rotten as a pear.

More of your usual anti British ignorance.

I suggest you leave Britain immediately and live somewhere you like. Perhaps Moscow would suit you.

Laughing aside Hrolf, our government has admitted this debt many times, including formally at international tribunal; and yet we have still failed to honour that agreement. We are, by our own admission, the party in breach of terms.

And yes, I am aware that the issue was complicated by sanctions, doing as our cross-Atlantic cousins tell us, and the "we don't negotiate with terrorists" conundrum.

However, the underlying admitted debt was a reality.

But why now ?

Has the regime changed in Iran ?
Could it be we are trying to be nice to Iran over oil ?
Could it be the BBC were about to spill out everything about the tank deal ?

Timing is everything, and it's also a couple more Brownie-points for Johnson when he desperately needs them.

I disengage, I turn the page.

Hi N91-
For sure the meeja have a lot to answer for - I remember sitting in an office in Dubai (circa 2012) talking on the phone to a CEO of a company in the USA , she said I will visit you when the war is over, I laughed & asked, what war ? she had seen a number of reports in her press, also got her countries mixed up & on the strength of that she believed that pretty much the whole Middle East was at war.

I think you've exposed a huge hole in geopolitical thinking these days and the power of propaganda, sorry, media.

I would quite happily state that I could in no way be encouraged to visit Iran, for any reason, as to do so I would consider it within the realms of suicidal.

Having said that, all we ever hear about are extremists from all stretches of life in the media, as that's what is newsworthy and I still hold an unfashionable opinion that:

No matter where you go in this world, the vast majority of people, on their own, are decent, well meaning beings.

I do also like the notion that a lot of these places have certain laws, practices etc in place, which are rightly condemned however the apparent view is that they have a far superior democracy to ours in which every single person has wholeheartedly endorsed them.

It suits everybody for this to be put to bed. The Iranians have had a thing about their citizens having dual nationality lots of others have got into trouble with this over the years.

UK Governments since the 1970's have withheld these funds wrongly, in my opinion, and this has been seem by the Iranians as a matter of honour and therefore a sticking point in relations.

Why now is obvious, it suits both sides to move on.

As for your comment about the BBC and the tank deal, I don't think there is anything new to say it came out in the seventies.

As I indicated above I think Nazanin was unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, i don't believe she was a spy or anything like that. The Boris made it worse by misspeaking which was all the excuse the Iranians needed to keep hold of her.

I'm glad she's out and let''s hope this is the start of a more civilised relationship.

Iran is a fantastic country with a rich cultural heritage and could make a fortune from tourism if they stop arresting "tourists".

So do I.

So do the Americans....quite a few countries.

Dual nationality is dual allegiance.

Agreed. All those Remainers should have their British passports confiscated.

The way Johnson has interpreted Brexit it might as well have been remain.

He increased immigration....which was the basis of most Brexit votes.

The elites make a pretence out of democracy.

If you are lucky enough to be born with one of the more internationally acceptable passports - example UK / Euro / USA - that's great, you live in a democracy, you get to travel freely
(lots of countries don't require you to have a visa) & by and large you have the opportunity to experience plenty that the wider world has to offer - absolutely marvellous -

Not everyone is that fortunate.

Haha. I really don’t think that is high on Stirling’s agenda. It’s too much hassle to even travel to Selhurst. Not sure anyone in Wisbech has a passport anyway.
