We have only won 5 out of 22 games, 2 of those against 10 men.

This appointment would suggest that when he left us it was not because he wanted to retire but because the board had not offered him another contract. I wish him well (apart from against us), but he must know that even by premier league standards, the life of a Watford manager is never very long or particularly happy.

However poor the decision (even Clattenburg said this was an incorrect decision and the Ox goal should not have stood - and he hates Palace) it does rather mask our absolute need for a right back. Full credit to Joel for his sterling service but he’s not really good enough these days. On corners I’m also very nervous. Why would we put Jeff Schlupp on Van-Dyke, for example? Can’t quite put my finger on it but would have loved Roy’s views on our corner defence set up.. Tactically I think we have to mix it up. Liverpool were playing so high that a few long diagonal balls of our own might have taken the pressure off the back line and given Liverpool something else to consider. We did this more in the 2nd half - rather than always playing with it at the back - and it did give them some issues. You could say a Roy team may not have conceded the goals against Liverpool, but one thing is for sure and that is he would not have done much to fix it if his team had been down 2-0 at half-time and would generally look to consolidate and wait until at least the 70th minute before doing anything. Vieira perhaps could have reacted quicker on Sunday, but in fairness Liverpool were on fire with one-touch football and a pass success rate of something like 92% at half-time. I'm not saying Vieira should be beyond reproach but I find it genuinely baffling that some people have started to question his position. He's a young manager learning his trade who has had to overhaul a squad and introduce a new style of play on a relatively small budget in PL terms. Look at the teams above us, only Southampton have spent less in recent years. This is the main reason I generally supported Roy even when I got sick of his brand of football. Eventually money does matter in the PL. It's the same reason Roy will find it hard to keep Watford up and why Norwich will probably go down. It may even be one step too far for Burnley this time around. Good luck to Roy, but I've enjoyed the football at Palace under Vieira more than I have done since Pardew's crazy first six months.

Given Roy's average win ratio I suspect they will end up with just under 36points if it goes to plan - maybe not enough - who knows.
