Billy Gilbert. Brilliant shout sickboy, I knew he could hit opponents hard, but I remember being quite shocked he could hit a ball that hard, it was a great strike

Darren Ambrose v Sheffield Utd for a vital 1-0 win. Also for the sheer shock Colin Taylor thunderbolt in the League Cup win v Leeds in 1968-ish. It just crashed in. Oh and Ayew v West Ham. What a cracker; having dribbled round half the team I thought at first he had chipped it over .
I got vision, and the rest of the world wears bifocals. |

Good memory. no it wasn't - that was a lob into the area, over-hit which caught the keeper flat-footed. The one you're after was the third goal in a 3-1 home win v Bolton in '80. The ball rolled gently outwards from the opposing defence and Billy caught it perfect and lamped it in from a good 35 yards - one of those that's still rising as it hits the net.

Obviously there's a few, for me Wright vs the wombles lob from what seemed like our own half, Dougie in the play off semi vs wolfs, ambrose vs villa or man utd, gray free kick vs man city, Armstrong stanction goals vs wolfs.

I always get the two confused as well, but I make you right, I think I remember Bolton wearing green!!

Glad I started this thread. It sure has triggered lots of fabulous memories. Well done lads!
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

I seem to remember Wright chasing a lost cause in the play off final against Blackburn and then slotting it past the keeper. Not spectacular - just sheer effort.

The original David Beckham goal. the only one I recognise is the second goal in their 2-0 win in '80 - it was on the big match revisited lately, about 30 yards but at a sharp angle, the stand in keeper David Fry wasn't well positioned but it was an amazing strike, but some way short of Beckham range if that's the one you mean

Fat Sam Allardyce was playing for Bolton we played Bolton quite regularly back then - I'm only going from memory - I may dig out the programme from the bowels of my collection, but I saw Fat Sam score an OG for Bolton in a 4-3 loss to Chelsea the season before - I kid you not it was the decisive seventh goal and Chelsea were 3-0 down with 13 minutes left then brought on Clive Walker who won the match single-handed (bit like Bale at Inter, not far off, he was on fire down the left wing, all four goals came that way).
