Also wonder if the presence of Gary Hillman on the board might have helped. He's the chairman of Cray Wanderers, which was Guehi's first club as a kid before he went to Chelsea, and Guehi still appeared at youth award ceremonies and stuff even a couple of years ago as he's got a good relationship with Cray and Hillman. As far as I'm aware, Hillman is still a director at Palace? Maybe DF has been working hard behind the scenes after all, but knew none of these players would get a look-in under Roy so was waiting for the new manager

See your point and don't intrinsically disagree. Parish was very bullish in his video saying that this window was planned for and the out of contract situation not the mismanagement everyone took it to be. Two points. It may be planned but it's defo high risk! It's not just a new season but a whole new outlook possibly. No longer a Southern Burnley but a production line of talent approach. Think the nearest parallels are with outfits in France and Germany than the PL. It's a dangerous step as - imho of course - it feels as if the goal is not so much higher standing in the PL table in itself as a different model of club that is the goal. [Quite realise this is oversimplistic and possibly wrong headed!!!!] The other point is that waiting a year for the depressed market and reliance on RH to get us through on a shoestring is brilliant in retrospect. Plenty could have gone -and still could go - wrong. He who dares.... Originally posted by Badger11
I not sure I agree. I think our transfer budget had been strapped by our owners and FFP however when the pandemic started they saw it as an opportunity. I think many on this board pointed this out last summer that the fincancial impact of COVID would drive prices down so we should not pay over the odds at that time. Parish has deliberately allowed players contracts to run down and off loaded expensive flops and re-signed players on lower contracts (I hope). Outside of the PL there is no real competition Spain Italy and German clubs are all struggling and will have to sale. Our only real competition is with other PL clubs and they may not need the players we want or their budgets are limited because they spent last summer. I wonder if West Ham will spend big this window? Possibly not, Everton probably yes the rest I think will be very specific maybe one or 2 players. The big 6 are looking to offload squad players before they buy and in any case we aren't really competing with Man united for Sancho. To sum up I think Parish has played a blinder to get us to the point where we are now the question is will we buy the right players, I guess time will tell.

Will be like supporting a different club. Plus Mcarthur/Luka/Schluppy/Benteke still get picked over this lot for me.

3 models we could be following based on an invested youth base. All the following spend big and have the best academies. 1. Southampton. Bring them through and blood them early in first XI; but then sell the best. I think we are going for the Man City approach. At least I hope we are.

Absolutely The key will be managing the change over 2/3/4 windows. There will be some instances of it working but almost every instance I can think of when a club has done a complete spring clean has resulted in chaos. Also the strength of the club is in some part the "spirit of 2012/13" and that is something that is handed down from one generation to another - continuity is needed if that is not to be lost. Slightly forgot about Southampton - they are not a bad model. The reality is that we will always be a selling club. Leicester is after all too. It's not the end of the world. The problem is when you have just the one asset - Wilf - which would cripple the team if he went. Originally posted by silvertop

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
