Which rather proves my point. Those that claim it was Freedmans team that took us up c[b]an discount Southgate finishing 12th as you could argue that’s someone else’s team. When he put his own stamp on it he finished 13th and then got relegated.
He was doing OK (ish - 4th) in the championship but that’s his level, I reckon, but they sacked him.
We do not have a tactical footballing genius in charge. This bloke is not the messiah.

In his first season,when Middlesbrough finished 12th, Southgate did sign a few players including Woodgate.Huth,Arca and Euell but the majority had been signed by Bryan Robson and Steve McClaren.

Frankly, it was worse. I'd sooner watch a Palace game any day.

I don't go with the theory that last night's performance was part of a cunning plan to get into a we'll judged position in the group. Not after all the pre-match talk about how we're going to play an offensive game. Southgate was quoted as saying that beating Scotland is one of reasons he took the England job. Didn't look like it.

The team selection was baffling. The play was negative. The result was embarrassing. Our prospects are dismal. I'd love to be proved wrong.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Playing 2 defensive midfielders against a poor Scotland team, that cant score a goal, sums Southgate up. We have no hope at all beating a decent team with him running the show, its all about him.
Kane dreaming of his big move, shouldnt be on the pitch. Only one or two corners beat the first defender, just very poor. The so called Yorkshire Pirlo should be out and Grealish in.

Scotland fans help clean London streets. (BBC website)

And yet, other captions that could be attributed to the photos are: "Scotland fans frantically search for dropped 20p"

or "Scotland fans check empty cans and bottles for dregs for the train journey home."

Scotland played well I thought. Fair result

I'll give you two scenarios ;

England play out a bore draw v Czech finish 2nd and go onto the final

England best Czech playing excellent football but meet Germany/Portugal as group winners and despite playing good footget knocked out on pens

Which is a good outcome?

Scotland were the better team, and they showed up England to be a over rated team, and why everybody thinks Southgate is wonderful is quite beyond me.
The players, and tactics, are wrong, players think they are wonderful ( that's more then funny ) what talent England does have is either not selected, or just sits on the bench waiting ...

No disrespect, but teams we do beat, are not exactly top teams, and then we only beat them perhaps 1.0,..and the press says we have just won the World cup..pathetic..

We are poor, we need someone who can change our over rated approach, and get rid of the old boy network, select players that prove themselves time and time again for the clubs, in ALL our leagues, not just these prima donners, that are selected time after time..

Here since 81...(LAST CENTURY !!).. x-Dunraven School, early 1960.... Palace 'nut' since 58....

Usual OTT reaction - it was a crap game, but that's about the only conclusion I took from it.

Dropping points in the group is really not the big drama we like to make it out to be; France drew with Hungary, Spain have drawn with Sweden and Poland.. we'll make it out of the group which is all that's important.

Southgate does need to take the shackles off; how you start two full backs like Shaw and James and then don't let them get forward I will never know.

Agreed.

A world class player can still perform when the side isn't set up for him.

Kane is very good but like most England players he's over hyped.

And Helmut45 made some excellent observations on Southgate. He is there because he's a 'yes' man, not because he's the best English manager available.

This is my main issue with international tournament football; I find the 'conclusions' so reactionary and based on a tiny sample size of 1 or 2 games.

23 goals and 14 assists in 35 Prem games last season for a rubbish Spurs side, 3x golden boot winner domestically, also won a World Cup golden boot.. but he's overhyped because of 2 bad games in the group stage?

2 Scenarios as far as I can see;

1) England Technical strategists have said that we want to avoid coming top at all costs, so after 1 win in the first game which lifted Spirits a little, Team were told 2 more draws would be perfect, and 2nd place is the Target.

2) England have (yet again) failed to turn up at a major tournament, and the same old failures of picking injured players over form players or ones that fit the gaping holes in our squad remain.

Not Looking forward to the Czech game. I can't see how we end up a winner here. neither team are going to really want to win it - in fact the Czechs probably want to actively lose it. If we go for the win we could look convicing but end up playing France or Germany in the Last 16.
Lose, and there's small chance we won't qualify at all, even on 4 points with a sh*t GF and GDiff.
Draws the perfect Result, but even then we'll probably end up vs Spain.

"It was a Team effort, I guess it took all players working together to lose this one"
