Did anyone ever visit 'Allders, bargain basement' ?
I used to know a chap who was a frequent visitor and he purchased some 'Fell Boots' which he used to wear regularly to work.I did not find them particularly attractive.

I wish I could say I remember, but the passage of nearly 70 years has wiped out that detail. Strange, given that it was such a treat.

I seem to remember the rides started on the High Street and went down the side of Kennards starting with a short but steep slope which was scary for a small child but of course I could be totally wrong
Bit of research proved me completely wrong and Chris correct

Can anyone remind me of the name of the big store opposite Kennards?

Are you thinking about 'Allders' or 'Grants' ?

Fell boots were all the rage when I was a young teenager and I definitely had a pair. Indeed, fell boots and baseball/bumper boots were regular footwear for youngsters in the mid to late 60s.

I've got a memory of rides passing by the Alms-houses.

Found this photo of the pony rides. I must say I have no recollection of them.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

My Mum worked in Kennards. Good old store with a fabulous Soda Bar where they made a fabulous Knickerbocker Glory and jam waffles.

And the constant smell of roasted coffee, at the arcade , before you got in the store.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Aaaahh that's better. I think I need to lie down.

Before I do, can I ask, 'What happened to all those coffee importers that used to grind the coffee so the aroma pervaded the area?'

I don’t know mate but as soon as you hit the bottom of George St, it drew you in, it was almost as if it warmed the air . Oh for the the old , County Borough, with its richest high street South of Oxford St. multiple picture houses and pubs. It’s Z division police, its own local fire service, ambulance service. Who could forget , the Croydon General Hospital, at W Croydon? Not much to do after ten at night though.
Was born there in the war and bred there Left many years gone now, and am really a stranger now in the present Croydon, don’t come there often, it’s a really strange feeling when I do , to be a stranger in a town you once thought of as your own.
