Mutation is evolution. Depending upon how much fear the media wish to create the form of words will match. This virus is doing what all viruses have ever done. The normal course of events is that it will 'mutate' or 'evolve' into less deadly forms as time goes by. The gate keeping to one set of views and outright bias by the media during this pandemic has been off the charts. I'm confident that in a few years time hindsight will look at the hysteria compared to the reality and it won't be kind.

Damn...there I go commenting on this topic. It's kind of pointless....as soon as Boris caved into Imperial college's projections this whole disastrous saga has been set. The amount of money spent is frankly crippling for generations to come...I honestly don't see a way out in those terms. The west is holed below the waterline...it literally survives on printing money and increasing debt. Most people just have no real idea about it. The abuse of civil liberties is an outrage but you might as well shout at the moon for all it matters. This country is run by Karens and Kens and that's all there is to it. All the discussion points just go round in circles....after a while the only point is who gets in an entertaining insult.

For most viruses, replication involves making many errors. This means that viruses like the flu mutate rapidly. This can mean that many treatments and vaccines become ineffective, and is one of the reasons why we need a new flu jab every year. However, coronaviruses proofread their replicated genome and so they accumulate mutations at a slower rate. Mutations do occur, though, and could have many different effects on the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and our ability to control the pandemic. The majority of mutations will have no impact on the virus or on the disease. Occasionally a mutation will enable greater growth, transmissibility or escape from the immune system, in which case the mutated virus may spread widely throughout the population. The only adaptation undertaken by viruses to my knowledge is that they can switch from the lytic phase to the lysogenic phase and back again. Edited by Mapletree (03 Jan 2021 12.00am) Well, your knowledge ignores the fact that viruses pre-exist all known existing life on this planet. Maybe all life ever. It's unknown. What you dismiss as 'mutation' is actually evolution. Dress it up any way you like, we either live with this virus, or we die from it. Adaptation (evolution) is the preferred method of survival. It has worked for millennia. For all living organisms. Hide from the newly evolved organism as much as you like, but it will change and come back again and again. The whole of the world species needs to adapt (evolve) to the changing ecosystem. Especially as the climate changes. Trying to hold back changes in evolution is futile. The debunked analogy is Cnut, but it is that pointless.

Oh for goodness sake It is irrelevant that viruses may pre-date life and also that viruses may or may not be considered to be a life-form. I dismiss nothing. I said that viruses tend to mutate. The fact that mutation is the first step in evolution is also totally irrelevant to what I said. If we allow the virus to replicate to an enormous degree, more mutations will follow. Some probably will be more harmful to humans one way or another. Maybe such mutations would be inevitable anyway but not so rapidly, so that our systems would have the chance to adapt and/or our medicines. What makes the current situation a crisis is that this virus is unique, so we don't already have protections. If we don't slow it down significantly it will claim many lives that could otherwise have lasted far longer. And affect the long-term health of many survivors. You seem to believe that unnecessary loss of life is quite acceptable, I do not. Maybe you don't see as much of it as I do.

ESB was 4th on the list the first three being different Winter Warmers. Anyone who completed it and could sign a register legibly got their name engraved on a brass plaque. Some brave souls did it but not me.

I heard of a chap who consumed 6 pints of ESB at lunchtime and spent the next two days in bed.
