So at half time in this thread, here's the scores of the blame game so far... Teachers 1: they were too generous with their predicted grades, and generally give out too much false hope which doesn't prepare kids for the real world. Kids 5: They're 'thick c***s', who are lazy, did nothing and now play the victim as they always do, are all entitled to become millionaires but have no respect or brains to do anything else. Government 0: how could we expect them to do any better than there perfect neutral model of guessing? Criticizing them is unfair on the poor little munchkins who worked so hard. Haven't we all made mistakes after all? Still all to play for though in the second half!

Not sure who has blamed the kids - saying that it shouldn’t just be tea and medals for everyone isn’t a dig at the kids, if anything it devalues achievement for those who have them. Grade inflation hurts those who deserve the grade they got - what’s the point in busting your gut to get an A* if most people get them? The reason A* was brought in was directly because of grade inflation and too many kids getting As - it became so difficult to separate them. I’d say it’s the civil servants who get most of the blame, then ministers and teachers in that order. You do have to wonder about some of these people and how they don’t see that averages and models don’t work for everyone.

I'm surprised the problem with the algorithm wasn't spotted earlier - there must have been a qa exercise.

While ultimately responsible he didn’t sort algorithm, but algorithm is so basic and there was no thought as to how it screwed over outlier candidates. That being said, would hate to be applying to uni next year with all those inflated grades around. Is it too late for me to get my predicted grades, only 16 years late? Predicted grades is a terrible idea, but probs not as much of a disaster as the algorithm. Just wait for the appeals about the predicted grades which many kids/parents don’t even know what they are yet. What happens if your school screwed your over to try and seem accurate and avoided there whole cohort being brought down? Teachers that over estimated also get away with it - such a mess.
