I'm going to play devils advocate a bit here but it is something I kinda feel. People berate players who didn't want to sign temporary contract extensions to see out the remainder of the extended season. But does this not work both ways? Contracts are contracts. Clubs were also able to release players who's contracts were up who they didn't want to keep and thus saving on their wages and those players being out of work. Don't hear people blaming clubs for this. Football like it or not is a big buisness and their is little place for sentimentality or loyalty when money is involved. In fairness to him, had he signed a 3 year deal with Bournemouth on £67k/week, and a 25% wage cut on relegation, he'd be pretty gutted right now. Especially with them selling Ake so they don't 'need' to sell Fraser. Even more so if he'd torn his hamstring and was out for 3 months like many, many players did during this period. He may have helped them stay up but most of their defeats were comprehensive. His career would be in tatters at that point because you get into the Wilf situation - no-one is paying big ££ for a player in their late 20s right now who is off form or, in this case, would have been playing Championship football. Through anything but the rose tinted specs of a football fan, it's really hard to objectively argue that he didn't do the right thing for him. The Zaha one is frustrating because he didn't pull his finger out when he is guaranteed £100k+ a week for the next 3 years. Fraser didn't have that security. He has one big contract left in his career - hard to blame him for wanting to secure it.

I don't care too much about his antics at Bournemouth. Does a fully fit, on-form, determined Fraser help keep us up? You bet he does. And he can play in way that suits Benteke, which could be huge. The money is so difficult to assess after the impacts of Covid. That's for our beancounters to figure out.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Never liked playing against Bournemouth with Fraser which tells me I wouldn’t mind him on our team.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

My feeling with Fraser is that he would be like when we signed Townsend, i.e a good workmanlike winger who will chip in with a handful of goals and assists each season. If we can get him on a contract that is not silly money then he is a pretty low-risk if unexciting option and he plays on the left, which if Zaha goes is a position we will need to fill, plus he would make Meyer feel tall

Was known as the "Wee man" at Bournemouth who signed him from Aberdeen for £400K.

Well, nothing against having the player, but I hope not a 100k a week...

I heard we'd offered him about £50k a week a while ago and we're relatively confident until a larger club came in for him and that's when we started casting the net a bit wider. Whether the larger club has dropped out and we're now front runners, I don't know. The main thing is his contract has ended so he hasn't got any income at all at the moment, so for him, the sooner he can sign up for a club the better and there is a fine line between holding out for a larger club/offer and not earning anything for a couple of months, especially when he's used to an income of £140kish a month. If we get him, it will give us a big boost in our ability to go for our other main targets as our upfront transfer spend will then be much larger than if we can't get him in. It's probably the difference from getting him and two other first choice targets or getting three second choice targets in.

Think this would be a good acquisition. Likes to get forward and can deliver a decent cross, so could be utilised for corners as well.
