Appalling conditions blamed for spread of covid 19 in meat sector: There have been so many outbreaks in slaughterhouses across the US and in Europe which have led to sickness and even deaths of of workers that the conditions need honest investigating. Local communities in Germany and America have been shut down too. Even the outbreak in Leeds was kept hidden from the local community. 3 more slaughterhouse workers test positive for coronavirus in Midlands: The report states that: 'On Thursday more than 450 workers at four food factories in England and Wales tested positive for coronavirus. Health officials were closely monitoring clusters of new cases linked to food processing plants, amid concerns about potential outbreaks similar to those in France and the US. In the US, as many as 25,000 meat and poultry workers have reportedly contracted Covid-19, with at least 93 deaths.' Edited by sitdownstandup (28 Jun 2020 7.32am) It is worrying I said the other day that you would think that companies handling food production would have strict hygiene protocols even before the virus. If it was an office block I could understand a mass infection. What on earth is going on and where are the inspectors?

Flu virus with 'pandemic potential' found in China. - Similar to last pandemic the world encountered - 2009 swine flu virus. Infections found in abbatoirs and those people working with pigs. A World Health Organization spokeswoman said: "Eurasian avian-like swine influenza virus are known to be circulating in the swine population in Asia and to be able to infect humans sporadically. Twice a year during the influenza vaccine composition meetings, all information on the viruses is reviewed and the need for new candidate vaccine viruses is discussed. We will carefully read the paper to understand what is new. "It also highlights that we cannot let down our guard on influenza; we need to be vigilant and continue surveillance even during the COVID-19 pandemic." Edited by sitdownstandup (02 Jul 2020 1.14pm)

Coronavirus: They blame the rise in diseases such as Covid-19 on high demand for animal protein, unsustainable agricultural practicesand climate change. Neglected zoonotic diseases kill two million people a year, they say. Covid-19 is set to cost the global economy tn (£7.2tn) over two years. Ebola, West Nile virus and Sars are also all zoonotic diseases: they started in animals, and made the jump to humans. "In the last century we have seen at least six major outbreaks of novel coronaviruses," said Inger Andersen, under-secretary general and executive director of the UN Environment Programme. "Over the last two decades and before Covid-19, zoonotic diseases caused economic damage of 0bn (£80bn)." Meat production, for example, has increased by 260% in the last 50 years, Ms Andersen said. "We have intensified agriculture, expanded infrastructure and extracted resources at the expense of our wild spaces," she explained. "Dams, irrigation and factory farms are linked to 25% of infectious diseases in humans.Travel, transport and food supply chains have erased borders and distances. Climate change has contributed to the spread of pathogens." Edited by sitdownstandup (07 Jul 2020 6.24am)

Cheers SM, I know about Dr Gregor and think he is doing a great job. It's interesting that he has been saying for a long time that the way we are confining animals and farming them is increasing the likelihood of a pandemic occurring then this happens. Edited by sitdownstandup (16 Jul 2020 6.02pm)

'Significant national outbreak' of coronavirus forces part of poultry factory in Norfolk to close. From the report: In this evening's announcement, Norfolk's Public Health Director Dr Louise Smith said the situation is being considered a "significant national outbreak", and that it will be reviewed at the centre of Government tomorrow, 27th August. ...Those who work in other areas of the factory will continue working and the factory will continue to stay open. It comes as production at Northampton's Greencore factory gets back underway after almost 300 workers tested positive for Covid-19. The M&S supplier closed on Friday, with workers told to self-isolate.
