Not sure where you got him playing "every" game at right back. He has 48 matches as center half in his career and only 12 as right back. He has filled in at right back, just as Phil Jones has. Doesn't mean he's a right back. 12 compared to 48 is much less.

He’s made his name as a very capable right back and I don’t see many scenarios where toy would want o need to play him as a cb. Good knowledge though to be fair I didn’t know he played cb at all! I’m basing what I’ve seen of him since being in the Albion first team.

Ok, so that's 12 matches as right back. Is that enough to call someone a right back? Can someone even make an impression after this? And 9 matches at left back. At best, it's nice that he can cover in those positions (though I've hardly seen a right footed player cover at left back with the same good results as a left footed one- they do, but they just play like a very defensive minded playing, always passing with their better foot towards the center)

Why not this guy?

Let’s hope the club pay more attention to the form a player has shown in competitive games and not youth games. After all only an idiot would discount competitive games over youth games.

Only an idiot would discount any game. Why not look at youth games? It's where most of the information about Nathan Ferguson comes from. Sure, seeing him in action against Championship opposition is the reason why the transfer is being done in the first place, but he's very young and able to run now. In a few years, he will only be able to play as center back, no more as fullback, because he will be bulkier and slower. Ok, maybe fill in as Kelly does, but that doesn't mean he's a good right back by trade. A good center back, yes, I give that to Kelly. But right back? Hardly anyone thinks so. Same for Ginter of the German national team. Same or Phil Jones. Same for Stones. Same for Alderweireld. They all entered first team football as right backs, because they were very young and effort-willing and their teams did not throw them in immediately as center backs, they didn't have the courage. Matteo perhaps it’s time to practise what you preach then. After all you said Kyle Water Peters wasn’t good enough based on his lack of competitive appearances. You didn’t seem to want to take into account he had won the under 20’s World Cup. Now you’ve done a 360 to try and prove your own point as usual...I think transfer talk should be re named Matteo opinion page.

See, you use words like "you've done a 360" for a totally different situation (did I say that KWP didn't win the title with England at U210? I said to look at who he played against) and you make this about me giving my opinion (on a thread for talking about players no less) instead of actually coming with an argument. Cause you don't have one.

Just a shame I come across your agenda driven opinions more often than I find what I came here for in the first place.

I have had a conversation with a chap about players who played in different positions as youth players than they do or did as established first team players at their respective clubs. I am informed that Ashley Cole was a striker but filled-in at left-back at the Arsenal academy due to an injury and he stayed there. Tripper was a midfielder until his latter teen years and Kyle Walker was a centre-forward.Francis Benali played for England schoolboys as a striker. Edited by Willo (27 Jan 2020 10.05am)
