47 yrs Best moment beating Liverpool...at Villa park.Holt end was bouncing.

1953,age 7,with my Dad, think it was against Bishop Auckland in the FA CUP and we lost 4-3.
Best game when we beat Burnley to get promotion 54,000 or so at Selhurst.
Worst game 9-0 defeat at Anfield when we even managed to miss a penalty.

Choules didn't come on the scene till the early fifties. And I don't recall him being known as "Chopper". But a few years later Tony Collins and Bert Howe both took on that nickname. I'll never forget Choules, on account of one of the most spectacular own goals I've seen. I believe he was a good forty yards from the Whitehorse goal, but he passed back, and to everyone's horror the ball took off and sailed over the goalie (?Vic Rouse). That made it 2-0 to Carlisle. The other reason for remembering this is that in those days there was a raffle for the match ball, which a schoolboy syndicate to which I belonged won on that day. For a long time afterwards the Len Choules ball was kicked about in Brockwell Park.

By the way, Sir James, I am the same age as you, but didn't start till 1954 - so a novice compared with you!

1969 I saw palace lose 5-1 to another london club their first season in division one. (honestly cant remember whether it was arsenal or west ham ). I was smitten.
Best game....4-2 away to wrexham to secure promotion out of 3rd division...or Liverpool semi-final

My Dad was a lifelong Arsenal fan, and took me to Highbury twice before he took me to Selhurst Park in 1957 when I was 10 years old. I was immediately hooked and went as frequently as possible thereafter, often walking from Durban Road in Beckenham, cutting across the sewage farm at Elmers End to Norwood. My heroes of the early years were Vic Rouse, Bert Howe, Johnny Byrne and Mike Deakin. After that came the likes of Alan Stephenson, Cliff Holton, Alan Woan and Gerry Queen and many many more
As a teenager, I worked in a couple of betting shops in Thornton Heath and Norwood, alongside Len Choules. One of our regular customers was Johnny Byrne, who owned a racing greyhound named "Find The Ball"
What pleasant times they were

First game: Palace v QPR 1-0 Terry Long Sept. 1967
Favourite players: Jacko, Stevie Kember, Don Rogers, Peter Taylor, Nigel Martyn, Wright& Bright, Lombardo, Zaha, Jedinak, Speroni and the unsung heroes of 2013, Cabaye.
Worst managers: Pardew, Holloway, Warnock, Venables (walking away twice), and Mullery, of course.
Best managers: Bert Head, Malcolm Allison (in some ways), Stevie Coppell.
Favourite games: v Fulham for promotion 1969, v Burnley for promotion 1979, v Blackburn for promotion 1989, v Liverpool FA Cup Semi-Final 1990 and an odd one Palace losing 5-3 to Man Ure with a wonderful second half hat trick by Denis Law and seeing Georgie Best and Bobby Charlton play at the Temple of Football.
PS - my grandad was the middle of five brothers who followed Palace right from the start in 1905. They probably supported Croydon Common at the Nest before the Palace took over the ground on the former's demise.
