Probably,Margate v Palace FA Cup 1958,went on the train with older so called mate, who ran off as soon as we got there, and left me to quickly learn what it was all about.Worst match 2-0 defeat at Preston when Moyes was in charge, most of us in old wooden stand, booed off Ruddock and co at half time

I am 76 and recall my great grandfather taking me to Selhurst in 1947, I cannot remember the game I was more interested in the peanuts that he bought me that I chundered a little while later. Choules didn't come on the scene till the early fifties. And I don't recall him being known as "Chopper". But a few years later Tony Collins and Bert Howe both took on that nickname. I'll never forget Choules, on account of one of the most spectacular own goals I've seen. I believe he was a good forty yards from the Whitehorse goal, but he passed back, and to everyone's horror the ball took off and sailed over the goalie (?Vic Rouse). That made it 2-0 to Carlisle. The other reason for remembering this is that in those days there was a raffle for the match ball, which a schoolboy syndicate to which I belonged won on that day. For a long time afterwards the Len Choules ball was kicked about in Brockwell Park. By the way, Sir James, I am the same age as you, but didn't start till 1954 - so a novice compared with you!

70 years a fan. Since my first match in 1948 as a 5 year old. My mother and father’s families all came from Beckenham and Crystal Palace. I grew up in Woodland Road, Crystal Palace and went to Paxton primary school at the bottom of the hill.

First official game was in 1945 but I am told that my parents took me to a pre war game ( we lived in Grange Road) but I have zero recollection of this. At that time several games were between Probable versus Possible sides. Games were sometimes proceeded by bycycle polo, Norwood Paragon remaining in my memory! In the early post war years I can still recall a man dropping dead at the back of the stand ( the only one) He was putting out some placards about future games and was angry with some kids cheeking him, about four minutes later he collapsed and died.

My Dad was a lifelong Arsenal fan, and took me to Highbury twice before he took me to Selhurst Park in 1957 when I was 10 years old. I was immediately hooked and went as frequently as possible thereafter, often walking from Durban Road in Beckenham, cutting across the sewage farm at Elmers End to Norwood. My heroes of the early years were Vic Rouse, Bert Howe, Johnny Byrne and Mike Deakin. After that came the likes of Alan Stephenson, Cliff Holton, Alan Woan and Gerry Queen and many many more
