When Wagner first arrived at Huddersfield they were struggling and they finished a lowly 19th in the Championship.
The following season he led them to promotion via the play-offs after finishing 5th so that was some turnaround.
In the PL in their first season, they were favourites for the drop but survived finishing 16th.
He built up a lot of credit at the club and their supporters look over his overall time at the club rather than just focusing on this season.

Wagners job at Huddersfield is similar to what Dowie did for us. Taking us from a lowly position in the Championship to promotion via the play offs. He just couldn’t sustain the success and jumped ship, similar to Wagner. Never to get a managers job after his failure at Charlton, similar to what will happen to Wagner, as other managers are better than both of them.

Is Newcastle to Palace a different level?

I suggested Benitez because I think he has proved himself with no funds (and has obviously already done it with funds/big teams). So with our limited budget I think he could be the perfect manager and may even make players like AWB think twice about leaving

And for the record I really like Roy and think what he has achieved for us has been excellent. This is the first premier season where I have not been sweating over all the fixtures & permutations from the start of April

Ok home form has been a bit s***, but away form has been magnificent. We are Palace and I think mid table is currently our level. We wont get in the top six, so for me 7th to 10th is the target. There have been times this season when we have played the best football I have seen in my 44 Palace years

My only complaint about Roy is that he is too loyal to players not in form (e.g. Benteke or Schlupp) but he has limited options in our squad and players respect is critical for a manager.

Spot on Sir.
I was never in favour of Roy coming to Palace, in fact I was against him coming, but he has done well and he has the respect of players. But if he does resign then Benitez is my first choice, for he reasons quoted above.

Mourinho IMO has passed his best and he has become a victim of his own success. But it could be a good thing, he could prove good for us.

Dyce is my third option because I think he could push us higher than Burnley with the right funding for players.

With respect, after he left Charlton he was manager at both Coventry and QPR.

I very much doubt that both Benitez or Mourinho would be interested in coming to us ! We have to be realistic.

Most of the disenchanted Palace fans I come across are not unhappy with our position but the way we have attained it. Understandably people would like some entertainment for their money, because surely that is important? It is the same reason Puel was unpopular at two different clubs despite decent results. It is the same reason Allardyce was unpopular at West Ham and Everton. Roy has done a good job of organising the team and ensuring we get enough points and I'm thankful for that and I am not clamouring for him to be replaced. However, at 71 time is not exactly on his side and so it is only prudent to be looking at the future, be it next season or the one after. As to Wagner, see what Huddersfield fans have to say and I think you'll find it hard to find many clubs with so few points that still support their manager.

Good post

I respect your infinite knowledge, but it was a downward spiral from his heady heights with us.

Gerrard has been mentioned a few times but not Frank Lampard. I think Frank has got Derby playing good attacking football, and with youngsters, he could be a good option.

I would never admit to having "Infinite knowledge" as I am a bit of an intellectual vacuum but I thank you all the same for your comment.

I agree that it was indeed a downward spiral for Dowie after he left us.Perhaps there were extenuating circumstances which came into play.

All I got to say is that those who do not learn from history are deemed to repeat it. lol take one Alan Curbishley at Charlton, he got them promoted twice, got them in to middle of the premiership…the fans stared to get on his back and said he had taken them as far as he can and they “deserved” a manager that can play better football and take them up to the next stage and playing on Europe etc… they subsequently made him resign… and they got the mighty Ian dowie to take them the next step…. End result, they got relegated twice.

Dream on...neither of your top two picks would even entertain the idea of coming to Palace. Dyche has an inferior track record to Roy, and plays worse football.

Jury is still out on both of them as managers. If either came, they would only be using us as a stepping stone to their dream jobs at Liverpool and Chelsea respectively. Graham Potter would be an interesting shout. A young English coach who has made his name abroad, like Roy, and who is now coaxing some pretty decent performances out of Swansea with his hands tied by that club's finances.
