'The Flatterer' was a converted Volkswagon which had a roller attached and it used to be driven by Len Chatterton across the hallowed turf to flatten uneven areas in the goalmouths.

The first 'Flatterer' was a converted Fiat 500 the second version was a Volkwagon Beetle. I have attached pictures of them. The wheels were also rollers!
Hope they come out.

Oh happy memories! Remember Len and the Flatterer like it was yesterday! Remember Len being a big part of the Palace community for many years. Always used to entertain at the Kids Christmas party dressed as a clown.

My first game was 17th April 1971 a 3-5 home defeat to Manchester United. United had the likes of Stepney, Sadler, Best, Charlton and Law in their side. If I remember correctly I believe Alan Birchanel put us 1-0 up. I noticed yesterday that Birch still works for Leicester City in some capacity.

Remember them now !

I actually thought that there was a big roller where the wheels are housed going across the width of the vehicle ! Long time ago, I am 67 this year and the passing years have somewhat dimmed the memory ! Was right about Len Chatterton !

I’ve done 50 years as well :-) It was 1-1, don’t remember much about it but I was hooked and have been going ever since. Mind you the Alan Mullery days stopped me attending Selhurst for a while :-(

I think he was 'Leo the clown' but I could be wrong.
Also think he used to be a sports teacher in a school.
A lovely man - never heard a bad word said about him, only positives.

I was at this game.
I believe Birchenall did put us 1-0 up with an early goal.
Denis Law got a hat-trick and I think one of the goals was at the Whitehourse End when the ball went in off the post.
Birchenall is a Club Ambassador at Leicester and has been at the club for several years.I have a recollection of him on the pitch with a microphone many years ago but perhaps my memory is playing tricks !

Always remembering walking from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse end at half time!

Thanks for all the info on The Flatterer - especially the pictures.

The registration numbers date from the early seventies, which goes to explain why I was unaware of these wonderful vehicles. I got married towards the end of 1971 and a few years elapsed before I was able to impose some authority and start watching Palace again!

Cheers Willo I have been trying to remember the name he went as!! You are spot on it was Leo. As you say never a bad word said about Len. Had the pleasure of chatting with him a few times! Was a real top guy and Palace through and through.

We play Arsenal away on 20th April, would be great for Special day at the "Library" of football lol

Saturday 19th April 1969

Crystal Palace 3-2 Fulham

League Division Two – Att: 36,126

Manager: Bert Head

The Glaziers were promoted to the top flight for the very first time in a dramatic match at Selhurst Park. A point would be enough to secure Palace promotion over local rivals Charlton, but the visitors raced into a 0-2 lead through goals from Brian Dear and Frank Large.

Palace came storming back, and goals from Steve Kember and Mark Lazarus levelled proceedings before Cliff Jackson sealed the win and promotion. Just like in 1961 (above), ultimately the result didn’t matter as Charlton lost 1-0 at home to Preston.

Rather fittingly, this turned out to be Johnny Byrne’s last ever game in English football. The Palace legend lined up for Fulham on the day and would move to Durban City in the summer – no doubt delighted that his boyhood team had found their way to the top flight.

Before the match, the Palace Dolly Girls lined up in front of the Main Stand to receive orchids from the players.

Yes, I was there!
