I recall Mike Brearley who was a brilliant captain but his batting at test level was not that impressive. Yes - Ray Illingworth was an excellent skipper too, really tactical.

Edited by chateauferret (20 Aug 2018 1.35pm) There is the old adage of not changing a winning team. To replace Curran, who has done well with bat and ball, with Stokes after what he went through makes no sense whatsoever especially as we won the last test. Furthermore to bring debutant Ollie Pope in to bat at No 4 when he bats at No 6 for Surrey seems rather strange as well. As for dropped catches - there have been 19 in this series with England responsible for 14 of them. Edited by Willo (20 Aug 2018 1.50pm)

Time for a change of coach IMO. The series setup nicely though - really don't know how it will go with both sides being brilliant and dreadful next game. The weather may be a factor for England, and being 2-1 in front. Anyway this test match is not lost, we only need Anderson and Broad to score 200 plus each what's the problem.......

Broad cannot wait to get back to the pavilion quick enough. We now have two "No 11s" in the team. As for Anderson he holds the record for the most number of "Not outs" in test cricket. Why is Cook still in the team? Never liked him as a captain and his performances for England have been poor for ages.

Who was it that observed that it's harder to get out of the England team than get in it. There's that element to it.....Cook just hasn't been doing it for a while now.....But he's such a central stone to the England mindset that dropping him is obviously heretical.

Stokes and Buttler have remembered that this is test cricket. 3 days late but at least they're digging in.
Optimistic as ever |

A great day of test cricket, no other sport does it for me when two teams try to overcome over 5 days. Today we saw a real ball by ball competition, with England holding out at the death.
