So what are our ambitions Steve?

It's difficult to have this debate without straying into '' be careful what you wish for '' territory. After 6 seasons in the PL, my perception of the scouting and transfer approach at Palace is that nothing much has changed / improved. I agree with others on here in that our ambition first and foremost is to stay in this league. But to do that requires continuous improvement because every other club is doing that. At the moment I would say the most pressing issues are replacing Cabaye and settling the Zaha situation - if indeed there is one to settle. As for going up to the next level, well that may be made possible once the new stand has been built and paid for, but not before then in my opinion.

Hazard has just made a statement saying he wants to see Chelski buy quality otherwise he will consider his future. So it's not always about money, its about squad improvement. It was apparent to all last year when we had injuries that our squad does not have strength in depth, some were just not up to the task. My understanding is that the money has been provided by the yanks for the ground improvements, so we should have a budget for purchases. The other excuse which people keep talking about is FFP. What a mystery that is. How we keep saying we are near it,is a load of tosh. Example. So where does FFP fit in there. Every club should have ambition otherwise whats the point. I do hope that I am wrong but going on previous years, we will be last minute .com and looking for bargin basement signings that will not improve the squad, which send a message out to our better players that we are not ambitious. 4 weeks to go.

Cabaye and RLC are the only first-team regulars from last season who have left. Wan Bissaka adequately fills the boots left by the Man Utd lad, so that's not an issue. Our new GK is the player we probably needed a year ago. If Sako signs a new contract then with Wickham, Puncheon and Dann all back the only vital replacements we need are two new midfielders, and even then it depends on Roy's view of Riedewald and (to a lesser extent) Kirby and Williams' ability to fill the vacant roles. If Sako doesn't sign then getting Antonio seems like a good bit of business, with bookies now offering evens on that deal (from what I read yesterday). If Roy continues with his tactic of inverted wingers then I think signing two first-team ready midfielders would be enough for us to compete strongly, unless we had another catastrophic season of injuries. I think Parish may well be looking at the accounts and viewing it the same way, although I would be annoyed as anyone if we had a third pre-season of failing to address the obvious areas. For me, the key this pre-season was stability and hopefully for the first time in years we might finally have that. One less popular view (I would imagine) that I have is that Bentenke will be a beast this season if he stays. Reading his interview and the fact he came back early from his holidays to prepare suggests we may have a different player on our books next season.

Puncheon!!! Really!! His form was on a permanent dip over 18 months ago. Dann was out for months, and Wickham over a year. It would be good to have both players fully fit but it will take them time to get match fit. We need at least 3/4 players in the door, it's as simple as that.

Goldberg and Jordan had ambition, but didn’t know how to achieve it, ending up in administration. Your statement about shopping at Aldi needs explanation, as 10 teams in the league have as their most expensive signing below the fee paid for 2 of our players, so where are they shopping.

I will get agitated in a few weeks but Southampton and West Ham were thrifty last season so are expecting to let rip on transfers a bit more. Fulham and Wolves obvious have to get spending. We need to do some balancing and I think it’s safe to assume we’re waiting for Chelsea and/or RLC to fly home to start fitting the jigsaw together, unfortunate that may be. Leaving the rest till last day won’t be good enough and very risky.
