Teams need players to challenge for starter positions, not settle for being on the bench I'm really not opting for mediocrity. Joel Ward as 2nd choice RB, Kelly as 4th choice CB (3rd choice RB), Hennessy as 2nd choice keeper. I really don't see what is wrong there when we obviously won't have much money to spend. I'd love to be able to replace these players, but we've spent well above ourselves on transfers and wages in recent seasons, there's no way that we can go out and replace the whole squad. They are dependable professional players who would not cause dressing room unrest if they were subs. As for Van Der Wiel? 30 years old and has played about 20 games in the last couple of years, couldn't get into the first team in his last two clubs and now plays in the MLS? Nah I'm alright thanks.

Hennessey will have to be happy being a non challenging backup keeper which I don’t think he will be.

Great post. I have to confess that I am a pessimist ("no, really" and all season (every season) I have been expecting the worst. Just a whiff now that we might be all right. If we stay up we will need one heck of a Summer if we have any chance of having a better season next year. A huge amount depends on Roy staying another season. If Cabaye goes we need to have a really successful replacement. It's these types of fine lines that can be the difference. Surely (surely) we've already outlined targets and we're not going to wait until the August bank holiday before we start googling footballers. Whilst I'm not opposed to MacArthur and Cabaye going, we need to remember the extend of the injuries we've had this season. In an ideal world they'd simply be upgraded without being replaced, so we have greater depth.

It needn’t be that complicated or hard to recruit in the off season. The Watford’s and Burnley’s seem to do well each year with minimal fuss. We’ve shown that we can be quite succinct in the past with signings like Tomkins. Pretty sure that we’ll have our ducks in line this summer and get things done nice and early. Watford have an extensive European network, Burnley work within their local area. I never get the impression we have a strategy. Feels like we just sign players that are offered to us by agents, hence why they're always linked to loads of clubs of similar stature. Sure I'm talking s***, but that's just how it comes across!

Personally, I'd like to see us get a new striker, goalkeeper (using Hennessey as 2nd choice) and midfielder at the very least. I'd also like to see Delaney, Ward (only if there's a replacement or a new backup for AWB) and Benteke go.

A massive decline from 3 established sides, so I think a touch of cautious pessimism is fine! If Cabaye goes we need to have a really successful replacement. Still cannot believe premier league clubs unanimously supported this. A recipe for a lot of the lesser teams in the league to get their calculations horribly wrong. Given the fact we can barely mock up a transfer window that meets basic requirements, even after playing a few competitive games, this new deadline worry’s the f*** out of me.

My take on it is that we do identify targets, but we're way down on the pecking order so agents hold out - usually until the last day - and we struggle to get it done. With Dougie in place I'm sure we've got some form of plan. I suspect that management knows who will stay and who will go - depending on whether we're still in the PL next season. One things for sure - it'll be another roller coaster ride and HOL will have at least one melt down before the next season starts!

Imagine a transfer window where we get players that can actually get a pre season in, with the first team. We must lose about 5 points a year by buying our players a few games into the season, then realising they aren’t match fit.
