Wilshere to replace Cabaye

We should have signed him on loan to see which version of him would turn up. Now it's an expensive gamble, but when he's good he's very good and would justify the Benteke-esq wages. ...as long as we get rid of Benteke.

Whilst he could go to a champions league side as a useful squad player who adds to a British quota, he would be the main midfielder here and allowed to flourish... if he keeps himself in shape. If he's fit and in form for palace he'd play for england. If he's in Chelsea-type europa league/reserve side, he'd only be peripheral.

Judging by our injury list this season not sure we need to give the club doc/s extra hours.

Bertrand rather than Shaw
Long rather than Austin
Buy RLC
Grab Shaquiri and let Andros go.

As for Iniesta he will go for his payday somewhere easy. Wouldn’t want us to match those wages.

I think Ward-Prowse and Shaqiri are the only reasons their respective clubs aren't down already. Long can make a difference for Saints too but he can't manage ninety minutes or anything like. I think we could and should go back in for Amadou.

But we really need more strikers, not only good strikers but the right kind of strikers. And even if we don't lose Zaha (God forbid), we really need to answer the question of WTF we do if he doesn't play or one day leaves because this season we've won f*** all without him.

I don't understand the Ward-Prowse love in. Yes, he can deliver a dead-ball, but he's no Chris Brunt
Apart from that he brings little to the table evidenced by the fact that he cannot command a regular place in a side likely to be relegated
His output has declined over the past few years - though he is still young enough to turn it around
I imagine Saints fans saw him and Redmond as a promising future that just hasn't materialized

GK Fraser Forster (although imo Wayne's been better of late)
LB/WB Ryan Bertrand
CF Jay Rodriguez
CF Solomon Rondon

We don't have a chance of inniesta, plenty of champions league sides would have him in an instance.

Hopkin looks to curl one!

Some interesting options and suggestions; however my OP was actually about upping our level of target; whilst being realistic. OK iniesta is probably stretch too far; but I said that originally.

For me we either have to start stretching the quality of player we're looking for or just go for the same old direct replacements; a lot of whom have been mentioned above.

We should be sniffing around the squad players of the top 6 teams that aren't getting games but clearly are a cut above what we already possess.
