Always find it bizarre how people seem like they would rather be violently assaulted, or at least consider it a lesser offence than being spat on. Being spat on is gross, but being kicked or punched f*cking hurts and can do some real damage.

There really has been a lot of hysteria and emotive rhetoric probably across websites and social media.

I fully agree that what Carragher did was disgusting and reprehensible and one cannot defend his actions in any shape or form despite the provocation.

That said he wasn't involved in an affray, committed ABH, GBH, stabbed someone, badly beat up someone, hurled projectiles at someone with the intent of causing injury etc etc so I do feel some of the punishment that has been suggested is somewhat over the top.I suppose there are those who believe he should receive a suspended sentence or placed behind bars ! This is not to trivilaise what he did as it is totally unacceptable but I am just trying to introductive a bit of perspective into this whole affair.

Carragher himself said it was a "Moment of madness" - Sometimes I reflect that joining HOL was my "Moment of madness" !!!!

He has committed common assault though. I personally would rather be punched in the face than be spat at, and I don't think I'd ever have time for anyone who uses that as an attack mechanism (it would never even cross my mind, though I'd be more than happy if provoked to launch into a verbal assault). Worst of all, he's a sh*t pundit!

Carraghergate was the subject of the Radio 5 phone in yesterday morning and almost everyone that rang in agreed with you.

The other thing that came out of the phone in was that it seems police officers are often spat at

Genuinely can’t comprehend that first bit.

Really?
A punch in the face - a moment of pain, perhaps a thick lip or a bloody nose. Spit - just eueeew (sorry to get technical) as well as being cowardly, disgusting, obviously unhygienic, emasculating somehow (don't ask me why).

I genuinely would have far less problem forgiving and forgetting the moment of lost control and, given I understand the reasons and an apology was contrite, could (and have) shake the hand of the puncher and forget it. The spitter, I'd never interact with again.

He will no doubt be sent on an anger management course and given a big hug to prevent him descending into a spiral of shell suit wearing, self pitying disaster.
Before you know it, he could be running a scrap yard and handling stolen goods.

*I am joking.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham
