Whoa, what? A copper is wrong for exposing the Deputy Prime Minister's mendacity and use of workplace IT that would get Joe Public sacked? No one is above the law. Or are they? As was mentioned earlier Dominic Green did not break the law. He did lie about being informed of the contents of his computer. It has not been proven that it was he who downloaded those images. The police could have informed Parliament but chose not. I presume the officer disagreed with his bosses decision and decided to "out" him 10 years later. The Tories and many other MPS were upset at the police trawling through an MPs computer as they deal with confidential information all the time. Imagine you were a constituent of Mr Green and had complained about police harassment to him. How would any of us feel about the police going on a fishing expedition. As to why the police did not inform the standards and ethics committee I think they had an ethical dilemma of their own. It must have taken a lot of persuading for a judge to issue a warrant to search an MPs computer for the reasons I have given above. They never found the dirt they were looking for but did find the p***. Try going to a judge and ask him for a warrant to search an MPs computer for legal p***. I doubt you would get one Anyway he is gone and it is entirely his fault otherwise we would be talking about the police over reaching their powers.

I find it quite concerning. The police were there looking for evidence of illegal activity, they found none. The officer in question then chose to divulge information about what other, perfectly legal, activity they discovered. I don't know what the law says but I, for one, find it uncomfortable that officers should divulge information they come across during their work willy-nilly with the sole intention of wrecking an innocent man's career. Anything a policeman discovers during investigation deserves to remain private or, at least, within the force. What if they searched someone's home for drugs, and discovered none, but loads of fetish gear - surely that person should still maintain his privacy? Ok, I'll rephrase. I agree the points you have made. However, I was equally concerned that these arguments were used to bully a retired guy with motor neuron disease into keeping quiet. This is one for the Moral Maze with all sides being right... and wrong.

It was reported tonight on my local TV news (Meridian), that the police didnt have a warrant. Apparently the computer was handed over voluntarily.

I don't really think it matters so much what was on his computer, but that he lied to parliament. That's just something you can't get away with.
