The Sex Pistols were an odd phenomena. A couple of great songs, performed by some fairly talented musicians, pretending to be s**t, backed up by one of the worst bass players of all time - pretending to be great. Its all about McLarens fixation on the New York Dolls, his love of Situationalist philosophy and Westwood's vision. The big shock of the Pistols, was finding out that 'Johnny Rotten' was actually far more talented than you realise with Pil.
