I would go along with that , but remember , you cannot do that if Wayne is playing.

That is exactly right

Agree but can't see it happening. Would be more conceivable if he'd been our captain for years and retained the status despite not necessarily being a starter, but would seem strange to officially announce him as captain pre-season and then subsequently not play him. I love him but have said on many occasions I think he is the real weak link in this side, especially in the new system where you need composed players who can pick their head up and play weighted passes!

The point is a back 3 gives you many variations and in the system we have played in every game so far, playing with a back 5 at many points of the game is exactly what has happened.

We're the Arthur over ere!

The sloppiness in our play which is probably down to lack of understanding of this formation is going to give us major problems in the coming weeks. These players just don't seem to be good enough to play with 3 at the back. Prem sides will be even better at taking the chances with us giving the ball away so easy and not being able to hold onto it when receiving a pass in tight situations? I hope I'm wrong but I can see the same problems as we had at the start of last season under Pardew. Plus we appear weaker in our squad without Cabaye and McArthur available? Luka needs to be in midfield and Tompkins in his place at the back. It's obvious to see that in my opinion and even then that will only help a small amount as that back 3 will be under so much pressure from prem sides. I'm very worried for my team and my sanity over the coming months :-(

Not v encouraging. Zaha most likely to cause problem but seeing little of ball. RLC and Riedewald look pretty good.

Lokilo has looked for and seen as much of ball as anyone. Younger version of Lee with promise but why he is taking our set-pieces god only knows. Snodgrass anyonw?

Benteke pretty anonymous

Both Zaha and Benteke not really in this so far, which is worrying.

Is it just me or didn't we try this type of 'progressive' football at the beginning of last season? I reckon there's going to be a lot of games again where we'll be 'playing well' but losing most of the time.

I agree. I am very worried that we do not have the squad to be able to play the 3 at the back system. I read that Ajax under FDB were very strong defensively but I imagine they had players who were capable and comfortable playing the system.
