I was hoping for a slower style/system change but it looks as if we are going from the off which could well lead to another poor start and trouble by christmas. Really hope I'm wrong.

I share a similar concern and feel for us to be successful in this formation, we need a big personal change. Whereas we could stick to a 433 and only need 3 players but with this 3-4-3, I feel we maybe need 6 or 7. This formation doesn't suit most of our current defenders and the likes of puncheon too slow in possession.

That's the way I thought we'd be going, especially as the budget would appear to be limited to about that number of signings. If we'd gone with 4-3-3 yesterday I'd boldly suggest we'd have seen a different result.

A year ago I'd have probably agreed however, Chelski just won the title with 3 at the back not in their preferred positions & two wingbacks that were never wingbacks. There was a good article in the Times a while back that detailed how these 5 were all out of their natural positions/comfort zones but Conte made it work.

I think what it boils down to is these guys are professional footballers and, to a degree, should be able to play in any system.

What makes me feel better is FdB's comments from the outset - he wants to try & change us, it won't happen overnight & he will adapt things accordingly. He's even been quoted as saying he will always learn from his mistakes - something Pardew never managed to do & that nearly cost us our EPL status.

I, for one, am still excited by the prospect of a new era for us but am not expecting an instant impact, nor miracles at this early stage.

Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five!

The bottom line in the Premiership is that if a Club cannot afford to buy very top quality players throughout the side then it has to do what Big Sam preached and focus first and foremost on keeping a clean sheet. SP has made it clear that we are cash constrained in this transfer window so rather than trying to get an ordinary squad of players to play Sexy "pass from the back" football, we need to stick with "Clean Sheet First" football that kept us up under Sam. Even that is going to be a challenge without Sakho in the heart of our defence but it is the way to go this Season.

FDB could be undoing the good work that Big Sam put in place.

Yesterday did ring alarm bells and the lack of any suggested top quality signings 3 weeks before our Season starts does not help.

Bringing in players like Lofus Cheek is all very well if he can be used as a bench player but he is never going to make a massive difference instantly to our performance at Premiership standard. He's just finding his feet as a young player.

Agree strongly with nobby

Given your reservations, maybe you believe that in our circumstances and recent 'Success' under Allardyce, that Dyche would have been a better choice as manager ?

The thing that concerned me most was the service to benteke. Stop our wingers and wd have no creativity through thd middle. I know we've got RLC in, but think we really still need a creative no.10....

I love this post OP. This site is full of irrational optimism, unjustified suicidal negativity, Wikipedia driven facts, spiteful jibes and complete nuts with a little bit of good analysis thrown in for good measure.

Your OP fits the unjustified negativity, by the end there will be a bit of everything else added too.

Thanks for brightening my day.

But we are not Chelsea and do not, nor can we buy, players of the quality that they have. We need to cut our cloth according to our means and let's not forget that we beat them, in their own backyard, last season with our 'inferior' brand of football. Who were the April Fools that day?

Get the feeling that some of our supporters are thinking of the word 'Transition' and shuddering when one considers some of the issues in the past !

I honestly think this 3-4-3 talk is complete, utter and total Bollocks if playing with Delaney and Dann in the center. Who played midfield and was supposed to be ahead of the defense? I genuinely was pleased with the first half as I could not detect a minor bit off difference from us under Allerdyce but maybe I am tactically blind.
And further more: this was a hyped training session. The fact that 30 odd thousand locals scream at every touch and it is on TV does not make it more then a pre season training game.
