Woodpile, as that would be something the servants dealt with. Very good. It does make you wonder what sort of world this woman comes from if she uses or even knows phrases like that. Planet Upper Middle Class presumably.

Type of thing of thing my father-in-law would say. Ex-colonial, African servants that sort of thing, and Sedburgh educated. Nice fella though.

If that is true and I have no reason to doubt you then I apologise wholeheartedly. I am an old git and never knew that I truly believed it was about wood!

Genuine question albeit probably naive....are there any current 'colonials' or are they all 'ex-colonials'? If the latter, when did the last one become an 'ex'? Any colonial historians in the HOL house?

Any colonial historians in the HOL house? The UK still has colonies, I believe (Falklands, Gibraltar). Colonials tends to refer to people who 'were born there'. Hence, George Orwell was a Colonial because he was British but Burma born.

So Kermit's father-in-law will have been born in a colony that subsequently ceased to be one, hence the 'ex' refers to the current status of the birthplace and not (say) the former residence or lifestyle of the individual.
