Woodman in goal for the under 20s. Said before we should have brought him in.

If you put a defender on the line you will create a situation where the opponents will put their players behind the wall because they cannot be offside in that situation. If you are faced with a free kick taker with the ability to go over the wall, although not ideal a keeper needs to adjust his position closer to the centre of his goal line. A keeper with greater agility than Hart such as Butland is the future, why and how we continue with Hart who has been poor for about three is beyond me.

Goalkeepers will tell you that they need to stand in a position where they can see the ball when it is kicked so if the wall is to one side they won't necessarily be standing in the middle of the goal.If the free kick is central then different factors come into play.At the end of the day it's all about sight lines for a keeper. You also have to rely on the wall as well to do their jobs ie jumping, not splitting etc and I accept it is the responsibility of the keeper not only to decide how many should be in the wall but the positioning of the wall as well. My argument stands, if he was in the middle of the goal he would have saved at least one of those kicks if not both. Kicking it over the wall is exactly what they are trying to do because they know keepers leave more room on that side. If anything, with the modern ball you may be better off without a wall so that you can see exactly where the player is trying to kick it. Let's put it this way, if you were given a penalty from 5 yards outside the box, how often do you think you would score and would it be more or less often than with a wall in place?

Bear with me on this one, but why does the wall always cover the near post, the shortest distance the ball has to travel, and the goalkeeper the far post, why not have the wall covering the far post, the longest distance, the goal keeper then can be more central, or nearer to the near post, he may even have a better view

The link just reiterates the way they cover the near post, my thoughts are why, it seems as though its because " we always do this way" , but is it the best way

I grant you that willo, but we once had all the main institutions saying the world was flat, till one guy said its not, its round, i dont disagree that it may be best, but so far you seem to be saying its only best because thats how its always been
