Sadly, I think we just reached the point where the club needed a management refresh. It outgrew SP and Co requiring significant investment and expertise to take it to the next level. SP realised that but didn't let go of the helm when the new investors arrived.

The old boy's network at the heart of the club wasn't ruthless enough with Pardew who deserved to be sacked last May.

We probably don't have enough players doing exactly the job we bought them for and because of who we are have to rely on overpriced rejects from bigger clubs.

Because of where we are we don't use our youngsters enough and give them time to develop in the first team. They would bring through their passion and energy.

Let's just for a moment take away the emotions and look at why we just weren''t at the races against Sunderland.

For what it's worth here is my take.....
1. Sam is getting £4M allegedly to keep Palace up. Does this not cause a 'him and us' mentality?......he's getting all this money whilst we're getting f**k all.
2. We don't know what the relationship has been like between the Chairman and the players. For some reason do they feel hard done by (God knows why!) and it doesn't really matter what Manager is in the chair it would make no difference?
3. Sam must have known their collective state of mind because
before the match he made a number of statements about the game being high pressure and he didn't want a repeat of the Swansea match. This coming off the back of the Bournemouth match. Very odd thing to say as I believed this not only made the players doubt their own abilities but gave Sunderland a tremendous boost in confidence.
4. Right after Sam was appointed Millen made a veiled comment saying that perhaps this is what this group of players need or words to this effect. Is there a discenting faction within this group of players?
5. The fear of playing in front of your own fans over rules any game plan and the application and with it desire needed to get a result. This is perhaps the most worrying aspect and proves what a fickle group of players we have.
Clearly there is a core problem which needs sorting and quickly. Hopefully Luka and Sakho plus a fit Schlupp can help this but the players who were out there yesterday need to take a very close look at themselves both professionally and as role models.

Item 5 soon sorted as another display like yesterday be no fear of playing in front of your own fans as nobody will be there

With all due respect to the OP, this thread speculates on things we have no knowledge of, such as the relationship between Allardyce and the board, or the effect of Sam's wages. It's difficult to determine how those things affect the club because we just don't know enough. I think it's probably fair to speculate about a lack of confidence, though.

I'd be more inclined to look at the way the players are approaching the game:

I haven't seen a single game in which Hennessey measured up to the standard we get from Speroni - that seems obvious to me. In his limited work this year (FA Cup), Speroni has looked better overall. And I feel he has demonstrated over the course of his career that we can trust him. So why not put him back in goal?

We had defensive issues once we lost Souare. It's nice to have two options in PVA and Schlupp, and I hope this will solidify things back there. I have yet to see Tomkins do much of anything. Dann and Damo are playing poorly. I hope the addition of Sakho will turn things around. Wish we had better cover for Ward - he's not playing well at the moment.

At the moment our midfield is devoid of confidence and not at all creative. Puncheon is struggling. Perhaps some time coming off the bench will help him. Maybe Luka Milivojevic will push him to better things. A midfield of Luka, Jimmy Mac and Cabaye might be what the doctor ordered.

Under SA we seem to have lost our goal scoring touch. Wilf is back from AFCON. Great. We need him to play to his potential, which always helps up front. Despite our recent form let's remember that Benteke is scoring a decent amount of goals overall. Remy should be close to fitness.

So what's actually wrong? I think it's the players, frankly (with the occasional dubious tactical decision from SA).

Can it be fixed? I think so.

I think the key issue for me is that she said we would bottle.

What a lot of hogwash, nothing to do with an old boys network.

It basic our defenders don't defend anymore, Ward too weak, Dann different player to 2 years ago. Delaney can't play twice a week anymore, Tomkins a bit powder puff, PVA we need a defender not an attacking defender, Kelly a broken man, Shlupp promising and Sahko could be our saviour if he plays like he can.

Youngsters would be useless, very few Premier teams use them.

He claimed that Pardew made him scout out his replacement, and he picked Tomkins.

If I was him I'd keep very quiet about that !!!!
