Personally, I think he would be a good signing for us. In my opinion he is a decent and disciplined defensively and as others have already said, he is an improvement on what we've got

Bringing in players from other leagues is never a certainty. A lot of players just don't adapt to the Prem, who do very well elsewhere (I will spare you my list of flops). Some take a season to adapt, and we don't have the luxury of that kind of learning curve. I don't care if Davies can't score much, or there is a long fantasy-list of players who might be better. Davies is a better LB than Kelly and Fryers. So I say buy him if he'll sign! As to your other concern long term. Same question, can we buy a better LB? If yes, then Davies sits on the bench. If we can buy 2, then we sell Davies in the summer--what's the issue? The problem with the January transfer window is that everybody wants to buy, but no one wants to sell (except garbage). I mean with so many players out we can't even afford to sell Mutch until we have a replacement. Beggars can't be choosers, and we are relegation-fight beggars. Well for what he has done for Palace we could.

I think we want a solid LB who will contribute to shoring up a leaky defence. Surely at s minimum Davies coukd do that. If Brady comes in to play left midfield then we would have a much improved spine on the left

What's going to happen after Zaha leaves/is sold? You have to build to make this team a better team. Yes, I understand. You want to escape relegation. But it makes you scared and illogical. You're not getting a player for these 17 games. Ben Davies MIGHT or MIGHT NOT be good defensively in those 17 games and help save Palace from relegation. But what after? He'll CERTAINLY be of no contribution in attack in the next seasons. When Zaha leaves, if another player doesn't fill in well, you'll still be playing with Ward and Ben Davies as fullbacks and eventually, in another year or 2, EVENTUALLY, the team will still go down. It's not just about keeping the team up this year. You have to think of the future. This team has to progress, to bring players that can make it progress. To make the team a traditional contender to the top 7 in the next 5 years. Palace needs to get an all-round good player, not just one good defensively. Edited by mattteo (09 Jan 2017 12.55pm) We are currently in a relegation battle, therefore it is important to improve our current squad. One of the positions that we need to improve is at left back and Davies would be an improvement on all of our current left back options. You say he won't create enough goals for us, well that is not our priority, Pardew worked with the team to get them to be able to score more goals, we have been scoring a fair amount of goals but conceding far too many which is why defensive qualities are at the moment more important for us when looking for a defender. You said earlier that you would rather have your team score goals than be able to defend well because wins give more points than draws, however a balance of attack and defence is always needed in football you only have to look at us to realise that a team that can score goals but has a poor defence will not do too well or at Liverpool in 13/14 who despite having great attacking players did not win the league mainly due to the fact that the were conceding too many goals. When in a relegation battle, you can't be thinking about pushing for 7th place in a number of years, the priority has to be looking at what is needed for the team at the current time. Our defence is in need of improvement and I believe that if we buy Davies, we can work to create a back four with four competent defenders (if Wardy steps up too) and improve our defence. If we do stay up, we can then look at moving further forward as a football club I do believe that we do need to improve our attack as well, but this does not have to come from a full back, it can come from another attacking midfield player or another striker to partner Benteke

This feature suggests we also really need an attacking central midfielder to privude more through balls for Benteka when fit and Remy. Thats why getting someone like Brady in is so important. BFS used Dowling through the middle so he might surprise a few people.

And not really that injury prone, he had a foot+hamstring injury when he was on fire at Monaco the other year (teaching the fullbacks in France how it's done), and that's why they didn't buy him in the end. He's way past his injuries, but just doesn't play for Madrid, where Marcelo is doing really well. Instead of paying 9 million for Shlupp Palace should just get Coentrao on a free and pay him 60000 a week.

And then there is Rausch who on paper looks like he should be a good left back...but then even he has been available on a free transfer twice and he has never been signed by a top German club. Why isn't FC Koln a good club? They're 7th in the Bundesliga, while Palace is 18th in the Premier League. I don't see how Rausch wouldn't come from a good club

It's like when Liverpool with Kenny Daglish tried to make an all-Brittish team and paid soo much money for Any Carroll and Downing. We can do a round-up if you want, you'll see that players from within the PL have a bigger chance of being unworthy of their transfers.

Lol maybe being best friends with Ronaldo wouldn't make a big difference...perhaps playing for Real Madrid or playing for Palace is what really matters! If he's over his injury problems then tell me why he would choose to sign for Palace when there would be a host of top European clubs just waiting to take him. Listen I just think its a bit of a wild suggestion to be looking at Real Madrid players who could find Champions League football in their choice of country if they wanted to move on.

PL clubs have money, that's why they CAN look at these players

Did we not keep the receipt for the last left back we had off Spurs? If so, can we take him back and exchange him for one that works?

But I still doubt he would want to sign for a club who are in a relegation battle and I doubt we would be able to offer him much better than what he is on at Real Madrid
