Paul Hinshelwood, many people forget he started out as a centre forward and my uncle hated him with a passion!!! When we were driving up from Windsor and he was selected to play because Swindlehurst was suspended my uncle nearly turned the car around.
He was right another 0 - 1 home lose to a s*** northern third division team.
Great Great days!!!

Ha ha - your Unc was spot on. Doris may have been the worst centre forward we have ever had.

But, by golly, he is the best right back we have ever had. By far.

Not sure he was the best right back we ever had by far (as i'm sure Clyne would give him a run for his money) however in essence I agree Kermit, PH was also in my opinion, the best right back to ever play for us.

You are right. I didn't get to see Clyne much at all and forgot about him.

I've read nearly 6 pages of this and can't believe no one has mentioned Tommy Langley. There were so many unpopular players in the mid 80s, we were in the doldrums then but Tommy Langley got the most stick, with Ricky Heppolette not far behind.

I too remember Borg Thorup and Per Bartram, two Danes signed from Morton. Neither played many games so difficult to say they were unpopular.

You have bought me out in a cold sweat - I am sure I am thinking of the same match. If it is, it was 1975-1976 season when after taking the division by storm before Christmas, our form dived as we went on that cup run. There was another match around that time - might even have been the same one - when Jim Cannon was pushed up to play as a striker ( I can't for the life of me remember why). God forbid it was awful.

In terms of current team, Fraizer Campbell.

Recent past --

Sean Scannell
Danny Butterfield
James Scowcroft

Never heard a bad word against Danny 'perfect hat trick' Butterfield.

Also, in my (admittedly cloudy) recollection, Stan Collymore didn't get too much of a look in but when he did he was dynamite! I was baffled when we got shot of him (but it all became clear in time).

Was he trouble whilst he was at Palace?
I was only young when he was with us but don't remember him being that good. I recall one time in a home match when he picked up the ball just past the half way line and looked like he was going to have a run at the right back. The crowd willed him on but he just knocked the ball out of touch by accident.

I remember Paul Mortimer getting a lot of stick. One match v L'pool he was getting abuse from one guy in the H'dale all match, even when he beat 2 and smacked the crossbar from 20 yards.

One I didn't like was Kuqi although he did turn it round a bit and then preceeded to score every time he played against us.

And Ruddock was a waste of space. Can't believe some fans applauded him when he was sent off away at Crewe (where we played better without him) or at home to Sheff Utd.

of the current squad, Although not disliking him, I haven't quite taken to Martin Kelly.

Some of these players had good spells as well as bad ones, Barber, Bowry, Newman - Mick hill is a good shout, but Venables would always get some of his mates in or players who were signed up with agents who Tel was matey with - late 70s we got Tony Hazell who played 600 times for Millwall at right back, he had brown hair in the style of Purdey from the New Avengers and as a young lad bantering with a West Ham follower of the same age I noticed even back then that Tony would always look worried and might redden a shade or two when the ball got near to him because he knew he was crap.

We had a Lifeline meeting just before the 1990 semi-final. Only three of us put our hands up when asked who thought we could beat the mighty Scouse. Then the bloke sitting across the aisle from me went into a whole rant about what a crap player Alan Pardew was and how he should be dropped from the side and released from the club. Sir Steve asked him if Pards scored the winner over Liverpool would he change his mind? No, said Mr I Hate Pardew. He may have even moved to Newcastle and started SackPardew.com. That put the idea in my head, plus watching Palace video on the away coaches, that Super Al was as likely as any on that depleted squad (no Wright, Thompson, Burke, Dennis, Hopkins and more) to score. He was a deadly header of the ball in front of goal albeit nowhere else on the pitch. I made a load of dosh betting Palace to win (final result) plus Pardew to score the winner. The manager of the William Hill in Streatham fell down in shock as he paid me off. Super Al was a sarcastic nickname that inspired the Eagle Eye to start an equally sarcastic comic strip, "The Adventures of Super Al." If truth be told, he's a far better manager than player, even though he had many useful moments in the Red 'n Blue.

One fans meat is anothers poison so to speak. Most of the players listed had their moments Pardews was classic,What if he hadn't scored in the cup against Liverpool?
I remember Jermaine Easter scoring a great goal at Vicarage rd a few seasons back and Whittle for Many was a hero. For me though Kugi's attitude to the fans was poor on many occasions Pi..ed me off.
