Why won't it happen?

Long range bombers is all they need....That's what they want and that's what Russia are providing.....Knock out that runway and we are fecked.

Complacent defence reviews assume far too much......You can't defend a nation's interests on positive assumptions.

You are really up for a good old war Stirling. You must be desperate to get at those tins of Spaghetti hoops you hid in your cellar in the 80s.

If its wasting them is bothering you that much I'll get a campaign up to buy them off you for the sake of peace in Europe...but I want those Stallone movies thrown in as well and Black Hawk Down and Sniper. They are a bad influence on you.

We are not at the meeting. We normally would be. We have always been key players in foreign policy in Europe and yet we are absent from the biggest meeting regarding a threat to peace in Europe since 1945. That is my point. The EU is the main player in Europe now and France and Germany run that. It is a catastrophic failing of the Tories and their half-hearted relationship with the EU.

We aren't there for exactly the reason I said.

Maybe you haven't been reading up on the situation but the UK has been arguing for increased sanctions and along with the US raising the possibility of arming the Ukraine.

We weren't there for exactly the reason the US weren't there.....Not because what we think doesn't matter but because Russia don't want to talk to us because we are playing hard ball.

Good cop, bad cop.

Putin would not have been there at all without the threat to his interests.

EU sanctions. Not British.

If you are not at a meeting you rely on others. I can see why the USA aren't there. They are not in Europe after all. We are. It is not good cop bad cop it is pissing in the tent instead of pissing out of it. The USA will be listening to French and German accounts of the meeting not ours.

But you have hit on an important point that we see ourselves as aligned to USA interest and not Europe.

I'm no fan of Thatcher but she was a states person. Britain would have been represented at the meeting under Thatcher, Major and Blair. All three were Party leaders but British Prime Ministers. That is not to say they were not divisive. But Cameron is just a Tory Prime Minister.

Bert the American sanctions are just as bad if not worse for Russia than the EU's.

One without the other is meaningless.

What happens in Europe is of fundamental importance to the US.....Hell they protected Europe from the USSR for all of the latter half of last century....Europe didn't stand a chance on its own.

The US and Europe represent the west...They are hand in glove.

Let's just state it again shall me. The US and the UK were not there because we have been far more aggressive over the Ukrainian situation.

If this comes to war, the EU can't do without us....That's how pathetic their combined military is...Putin is very aware that especially the US but also UK and France are where the military power is. You seriously think that some kind of deal would be done without US and UK involvement?....Lefty wishful thinking..You think that our people and the US aren't actually there.....The figureheads are the surface....There are oceans beneath them.

If you think Putin is there without this united front you are deluded.

If we weren't in the EU we could and would most probably act in concert with the EU on this anyway....Not being in the EU doesn't suddenly mean we aren't European....One is a political and economic union and the other is a geographical fact.

The ironic thing is that I don't want war.

That's why we need a strong defence and ensure that we can protect our interests......The bully rarely if ever picks a fight with the strong. Those who shy away from the fight attract it.

We live in a world of finite resources....The weak are damned to the flaws of human nature.

Firstly The bombers are very old stock (knackered)
and secondly the island has pretty modern and up to date anti aircraft weapons installed since the war in the 80's. Also the ground troops are not just 20 marines these days!!!

The bombers aren't knackered in terms of effectiveness. They can accommodate pinpoint precision guidance and operate at high altitude.

Anti aircraft isn't going to be effective against high level accurate bombing.

As for ground troops....without air cover they are sitting ducks.

Are you not forgetting about our own jet aircraft in the area?....the bombers would not stand a chance and be shot down before they got anywhere near....You really do under estimate our military capability in the area you really do.

I've already referred to the runway.

We have four planes.....This is twelve bombers.....Besides once the runway receives any hit all the planes are out.

Maybe you're just not thinking it through.

We could send a carrier force! Oh dam haven't got one now - but will have soon - dam - no bloody aircraft on it ! Well done DC

You surely do not know the area or the domain. I have served there and if you thought about it our aircraft are fast very fast and have up to date weapons that would out do any bombers that try to bomb the airfield. We are so well prepared this time that we should not worry about the islands. The Argies have had planes for years since the Falklands war and as old as the ones that Putin has given them....but they have not tried it yet as they know what we have in the area and will not risk it. The threats they give these days are idle threats and are only given to take the Argie populations mind of the way their finances and country are taking a dive due to the idiot woman in charge at the present time....Have you yourself ever really looked into the situation that now exists in the Falklands with regard to defences we have ??? You might be surprised if you did!

I think you're being massively complacent.

It doesn't matter how fast four planes are against twelve. All it requires is for one bomber to get through and more than that are likely in a simultaneous full on attack.

Also once that air field is damaged the number of troops we have there.....what is it...a thousand? That becomes irreverent once air cover is lost.

Once the air field is damaged we have lost the islands....With no means of controlling the air they could land many more thousands of troops than us and plus they may have old fighters and bombers but once that air field is gone they only need to engage outside of the range of anti aircraft guns and ensure the troops are landed......With no realistic hope of resupply..... modern era generals don't waste troops fighting battles with no hope of victory.

If Argentina want it enough....They have a good chance with these bombers.

Don't you honestly think that we have not got ourselves covered in that eventuality? We are not as stupid as you think we are. I base my facts on what I know and not what I think will happen. We are only a small military force in the area compared to the Argies but we are far superior in what we have with our modern weapons and ships that actually DO float around the area PLUS of course a submarine within distance of cover both for land and air attacks. As I said I have first hand experience of the islands and have marine mates who are serving out there at this present moment. I assure you that the Argies will NOT catch us by surprise.

This EU thing isn't going very well is it?

Inviting near bankrupt nations like Greece to join and then having to bail them out.

Inviting nations like Romania to join, whose inhabitants view that as an invitation to travel to London for benefits and prime pick pocket victims.

Then they court former Soviet block countries like the Ukraine to join and express surprise when Putin kicks off about it.

It will end in tears.

Ok then, lets see which of us is right. as essentially If these bombers have been added you think the current defenses are adequate and I don't.

If we increase our forces in the area I'll be right and if forces are kept the same you will. I'll happy to watch the issue.

I personally think you should apply for a job at the ministry of Defence as they have no doubt forgotten to think about the points you have noted in regard to our defences there. ????

Actually according to reports things are under review.....Quite understandably.
