As a former CB, you are either a natural CB or your not a CB, it is not something that can be coached or improve with experience, as a CB one essential asset is being able to read the game, and that is something that can't be coached into a player. Micah Richards can not read a game, when he played as a CB he was regularly caught out of position that is why he was moved back to FB.

Edited by Brentmiester_General (03 Jun 2015 1.39pm) Yeh what ever. I am a coach and I've never been able to coach reading a game, it's something that comes naturally, and there are very few players that can read a game. All basic rudiments of the game, and not even close to the rare skill of being able to read the game, I'm 68 years old and been playing, coaching UEFA A Licence, Professional Scout UEFA registered since 1962, and I played under Rinus Michels one if not the best coaches ever in the Nederlands, and I still can't read a game, and if anyone could teach a player to read a game he would.

Where I would agree with Bilko's sentiment is that certain players find it harder to take instruction than others and as such its the more 'flexible' personalities that often succeed. Edited by Lyons550 (05 Jun 2015 4.26pm)

That may well be the case, but at least I've been involved in football at a much higher level than you, so maybe not such a headless chicken, more a rooster.

Aston Villa in for him apparently. I'd love him at Palace. [Link]

Being reported now that he will sign for villa: RICHARDS CLOSE TO VILLA DEAL Micah Richards will be unveiled as an Aston Villa player next week, according to the Daily Star. The 26-year-old defender is a free agent after his contract expired with Manchester City, and is now set for a move to Villa Park. He will sign a £65,000-a-week deal after boss Tim Sherwood convinced him of the switch. Would have loved to see him at Palace as I have said earlier in this thread but at £65,000 a week I cant say that is close to worth it when the likes of Cabaye is on 55,000 at PSG

If you couldn't be coached, there wouldn't be much point in having coaches, would there, and for a coach to say that players can't be coached suggests there's little point in listening further to anything he has to say. Of course, some players are less coachable than others just as some of us do better in school than others but it strikes me as ridiculous to suggest a player simply can't learn a new position (and be good at it.)

I agree with the general thrust of your comments. Ashley Cole used to be a forward but was converted into a left-back, Glen Johnson was a striker until the age of 15 and Danny Rose used to be a left-winger to cite some examples of those who have changed positions.

These players have been 'successfully' converted into FULL BACKS, not centre backs. As a full back you still need to attack and be more technical than a centre back. It is very difficult to create a premier league standard centre back (in Micah Richards) if they have not been since they were 10-15? I don't think there is a point of adding a large wage for someone who won't have a secure place in the first team. Not many people have seen him play in the last year/2 so it could be a very large risk.
