Maybe the system allows such waste. Budgets need spending as proof you need what you need next year. Well that’s how a laymen put it to me a few years ago. Not sure if it’s true but if so I would think carrying dosh over would be better. I can confirm this is true. When I worked for FCO abroad, the HC had been allocated a certain budget to revamp the leisure facilities, mainly those for the children. However, by the time the spend was discussed the children had left post ( post 9/11). In my wisdom I suggested that the allocated funds could be used elsewhere, the horror on the faces of the othe committee members. I was politely advised that if the funds weren’t spent as allocated, the post would lose them and subsequent years would get less. Indeed the facilities were uodated but for no other reason than spending the allocated funds

While the sums pale into nothing compared to the corruption in the US defence world, the way the NHS is accounted can produce shocking results. I met a bloke who was engaged in a air conditoning replacement project in a major hospital. Nothing wrong with the current one that a few tweaks couldn't improve. However, they were coming to the end of the financial year. Through good stewardship of the purse they hade done really well and had saved plenty. Trouble is, the following year's budget is set by reference to how much you have spent in this one. So, they had to find a pointless capital expense to ensure the surplus was spunked in order to preserve their budget. Madness! Yep see my above post

I don’t want referendums. I just know that’s what would happen. Privatisation hasn’t always delivered cheaper public services. It’s often delivered profiteering and a desire to return to public ownership. You thinking you know what would be welcomed by everyone just indicates how naive you are. It just isn’t true. There are always some savings to be made and inefficiencies to be rooted out. There are indeed a lot in the public sector but it’s never straightforward to do so. Thinking that there are massive savings just waiting to be tapped is dreamland. If it was that easy it would have been done by now. I have to disagree with your last paragraph, from my experience it would be very straightforward to make massive savings but thise in charge choose not to, well they wouldn’t as it was their decisions in the first place. I am sure those on here who have worked in the CS or public sector will concur

There can be a rush to find something to spend the budget on lest it be cut the following year. It happens wherever there is a huge disconnect between those allocating the budgets and those spending them. It happened to me whilst working for international businesses with a HQ in another country, who would set the budget on the same basis for every subsidiary, unless there was something exceptional, without any consultation. I tended to ignore such budgets, spend what was necessary and then defend if questioned by pointing at the bottom line.

Reforming it has been promised countless times but without any notable success. My wife works in the NHS and some of the waste I hear about is appalling, alongside seemingly crazy management practices. Knowing something is inefficient and being able to rectify it within the constraints of public ownership are not necessarily compatible.

Labour defended and supported both the Covid response....450 trillion of debt which massively increased inflation....and it shouldn't be forgotten they wanted lockdowns to be longer and deeper.....and they want even more net zero and they support the Ukraine war...both of which affect energy prices significantly. So a plague on both their houses. Edited by Stirlingsays (22 Mar 2024 10.52am)

450 trillion I think you are confusing us it's millions. Mind you, give it time..... “The Cost of Tory Chaos” – £600 Million on 300 Migrants, Starmer accuses Sunak of wasting taxpayer’s money. Saying tata to Tata another 600 millions. Thats 1.2 billons up the 'swanee' and we have hardly touched the sides.
