No it doesn’t. Anyone selling rubbish will quickly be found out, especially if the business depends on repeat sales. Any company doing that are not employing marketing staff they are employing conmen. The ultimate aim is, of course, to make profit for the shareholders but you don’t build a long term, sustainable business selling rubbish. You look ahead, see what people are going to need and then work with the development group to produce it. Bringing it to market and telling consumers about it is the secondary phase. Sure. Marketers are all fine, upstanding individuals whose honesty knows no bounds. Just like estate agents.

You do realise the most wonderful human being ever to grace these pages comes from a marketing background apparently, I'll hear nothing critical.
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

I've had my moments. I don't think anybody can blame him for that. A bit hypocritical sometimes but aren't we all if we get the chance.

What was it that Bill Hicks said about marketing? Oh yes here it is. Now I certainly disagree with his advice for marketeers however the criticism for the profession certainly. Sure there will be good people trapped in crappy professions for whatever reason but in general it's a profession for grubby liars. Edited by Stirlingsays (22 Mar 2024 6.21pm)

What a range of incredibly small minded and incredibly ill informed posts. I would guess on here there are many people who like a range of Scotch, Gin, Rum, Cognac, Vodka brands or something similar. Take a look at how those brands have been developed globally over many years along with the brand franchises and values that are constantly reinforced. Success doesn't happen by accident nor are great consumer/other businesses - like Diageo, Pernod, Beam Suntory - built by chance. Consumer marketing professionals are at their heart.

Your pessimism is well founded. I have never paused for thought and am not about to start. What's the point when the world is so full of soi disant experts who are only too willing to put everybody right on everything?

Marketing is basically convincing someone to buy something that they don't necessarily need. I do it every day.

Carry on defending. Let's see how many you convince. Here? None at all among the group of die hard cynics. It amazes me that those with absolutely no commercial experience can think they know everything about it. Among others? Perhaps I might add a modicum of reflection to their scepticism.
