Yes but not OUR system of law/government etc.

Commonwealth countries have a shared British culture. I just can't understand an argument against this.

Not at all mate.

The bombers were British- they would have had ID cards. They weren't on the 'radar.'

The bigwigs were probably foreign- they would have come in on passports- ID cards wouldn't have stopped that.

ID cards are useless. Kicking religious nutters out is a start. The community challenging idiot views is a start. It seems as though Blair has only just realized that we have a problem with hate groups in this country. Maybe they should have thought about them rather than useless ID cards.

Fair points - but your sentiments on your "Big Brother" thread contradict what you said in your original post on this thread....

In India Cricket is played by approx 400 million people....

Most of OUR FORMER COLONY of India speaks English because of the different dialects.

One of our national dishes (ie consumed by high % of people) is Chicken Tikka Massala.

Is our culture really that different??????????????????????

Edited by Balham Burner (14 Jul 2005 10:20am)

Well apart from cricket and curry - it's VERY different!!

India uses:

Our democratic governmental system and civil service structure.

Our system of law.

Train systems designed and built by us.

etc etc etc etc

I refuse to accept that the culture in the Indian sub-continent and ours are not alien to each other. I think you're nit-picking and ignoring the obvious differences which are based on history, religion and a host of other factors.

ID cards in my opinion are a good thing but they will not stop terrorists. We should be told that the real reason for them is to stop the fraud, no card = no dole money, no card or E111 or insurance = no NHS treatment & so on.

I’ve never trusted this government with information and do not trust them to use it correctly. The big brother points raised were about the loss of civil liberties. Most people can accept some loss of liberty if it will help to keep them safe. I didn’t consider that the government’s ideas would keep us safe.

The problem is that the government and the Muslim community didn’t want to accept that they had a problem. The outcry that surrounded comments suggesting that Muslims might be searched more than other groups shows how ridiculous this became. Of course they should be prepared to be searched more often. Of course they will be under surveillance more. It’s common sense.

Taking civil liberties away when there is no benefit to us will not help anyone. It is a balancing act. Banging on about stupid ID cards etc. will help no one.

The best people to police the loonies are the Muslim community. They must take some responsibility for ensuring this doesn’t happen again.

exactly, there were british, not immigrants who have come in under our 'soft lilly liberal' system, in fact, they or their parents probably came here during tory reign, and the organisation who claim responsibility say it was because of the war in iraq - another right of centre decision - so it's still the lefties fault is it? i don't want to start an argument here, i am so proud our intelligence found them so quickly and i hope to god the muslim community works with us all here, it's the only way, i hope the joint conference with blair really gets the motivation going for them to take some action within here to help.

& as for Chicken Tikka Massala, you will find if you do the research this is a LONDON dish, I understand in India they do not have the sauce that we have just spiced meat, maybe I am wrong so please feel free to correct me.
