Spot on. The left have a staggering habit of treating the electorate like morons.

A lot of my Facebook feed is filled with lefties and the result has been greeted with an angry roll of the eyes, as if anyone who disagrees with them 'is too stupid to get it'.

This is so true.

Quotes from my lefty mates on Facebook today:

"Why am I surprised that people are motivated by ignorance, greed and cruelty?"

"There is nothing great about the Great British Public. May we all drown in the gutter as we watch our nation burn to dust."

Really progressive, voice-of-the-people stuff.

Can't be our fault because we have a higher morality. Change the electorate!

What do expect from people who always blame someone else for their problems. Oh ! the irony, since they accuse UKIP of that very thing.

My compassion leads me to think about all those who lost their seats through no fault of their own. It must have been devastating for the vanquished particularly those with sizeable majorities who would have expected to keep their seats.Politics can be very cruel.

And even though I am a devout Conservative who campaigned tirelessly in marginals, I take my hat off to Miliband and Ed Balls for the magnanimous and respectful way they accepted defeat and the same could probably be said of many, many others. It cannot be easy to make such gracious speeches and at such times.

'marginals', are they some sort of trousers?

LOL !

A Tory friend of advanced years refers to them as "Slacks" !

Congratulations, Willo, your assessment of the situation was correct, more so than most of the polls. "I doff my hat".

Indeed. Willo is 'devout' and very much treats his allegiance to the tories as a religion. In a future election where there's a Labour win, this isn't a man who's going to be predicting it. A broken clock is right twice a day .

Yes he was always confident of a Tory majority, even when I and many others were sceptical of his assessment of the outcome. Obviously, a broken clock is right twice a day, but he showed great faith even when his opinion was open to ridicule by many of us, so fair play to him.

He has earned the kudos of actually canvassing on behalf of his party, knocking on doors etc. as opposed to being a keyboard observer, so he deserves credit, even though I personally disagree with his views.

What I'm saying is that he's so passionate about the Conservatives and towing the party line, he'd have said that regardless, anything else would be self defeating. Don't get me wrong, I think people with that attitude are of huge benefit to the party they are dedicated to, I'm just saying that it wasn't so much a canny prediction as it was an unfaltering display of loyalty.

Of course, but faith in what you believe to be right counts for something, even when most people don't share that belief. He was right in the end, so even if he was just spouting party sound bites, he genuinely believed what he was doing.

I'd like to think that I'd get credit if I was right in having faith in what I believed in.

It certainly counts for something, I'm not arguing that. Only saying that someone telling us that a party is going to win, who would likely say that in all but an incredibly negative scenario, is not making a stunning prediction, they are instead displaying loyalty.

Much like diehards for Labour, Lib Dems and UKIP it's essentially your job to think that the very best case scenario is the one you're on the brink of and that things are going your way. Case in point Nick Clegg was confident that the Lib Dems were going to be 'the surprise story' of the election based on what he was seeing on the ground. Of course he was right, but for the opposite reason he expected.

But yes, I commend Willo for showing passion for what he believes in beyond typing on a keyboard .

This was the first election that was a fixed 5 year term, which means that the date of the election is set in stone 5 years after the last one.

Previous elections were up to the discretion of the incumbent Government. They could call an election anytime they wanted within the 5 year limit.

Obviously, Governments would wait for the optimum moment to call one when they thought their stock was highest. Very much a game of poker.

When Tony Blair stepped down and let Brown in as PM, 2 years into his term; there was strong speculation that Brown, for credibility and fairness as he was unelected by the country, would call an election to get the mandate of the people. He was in his honeymoon period with the public and would almost certainly had won. He decided not to.

Roll on a year, and the banking crisis and suddenly his popularity plummeted; so he stretched out his term to the 5 year limit in the hope that his fortunes could turn.

He must look back on his decision not to go to the country in 2007/8 and kick himself.

Thanks Bubbs.

I liked Brown, he was a s***e PM but a rather genuine guy. I spent the best part of 6 years working at both the Treasury and Foreign Office and had the displeasure of meeting a fair few MP's and Blair himself.

Blair was a t***, as was David Miliband. Brown was alright. Always polite and friendly and would often sit and have breakfast amongst the workers.

Also remember Ed Balls and thinking he was a a bit of a nob. Probably because of his surname, but I was 17 at the time.
