Injuries are part and parcel of every season. Yes they have happened to key players for large parts of the season, but you have to try and have the contingency plan for that in the squad. It can happen and has.

The problem comes down to the recruitment over the past couple of years. Was the money spent on Henderson and Franca the best way, when you look at the squad requirements? You only had to look at our bench to see that the board/recruitment failed badly in the summer.

It's fine having a policy of buying young players for the future. The problem is that you also need to have players who are good enough for now.

Its strange that I looked at the squad at the beginning of the season and thought we could put out a decent first 11 if everyone was fit, but the bench would look weak and God knows what happens if we have a few injuries.

A few players who should have been replaced and a few youngsters who just weren't ready.

Well said Painter.

Injuries to have played a major part this season initially Olise before a ball was kicked, Eze in and out aka Olise with hamstrings, Doucoures achilles in November and now Guehi.

Take the creative skills of Olise and Eze out of any team and they will struggle.

I looked at the squad at the start of the season and thought strong.

I don’t understand, this not been given new players last summer, aren’t Lerma, Franca, Holding and Henderson new players?
The pressure of managing a Premier club is well documented, blaming Parish for offering Roy the job, isn’t fair. He chose to take it, could be seen as loyalty by Roy or disregard for his own health and can’t give up football. The events of the season with long term injuries to key players, couldn’t be seen by anyone, so there is nobody to blame, I know in this blame culture, it’s hard for some to accept.

I take your point Painter, but we all know they weren't the players we really needed. Lerma - OK, Franca - injured, young and inexperienced, Holding - past it, Henderson - no words.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear about Mr Parish, I don't blame him for giving Roy the opportunity, but I do think he dithered too long in retaining him and putting our club in the unfortunate situation of having to announce Roy's imminent sacking at the same time as negotiations for his replacement were being finalised. I still think yesterday was a sad day for our club. Thank goodness Mr Parish had the decency to accompany Roy to the hospital.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

So we did buy players with Muzon and Wharton added in Jan, who were ready first team starters.
He didn’t dither, he wanted him to turn it around and gave him time, he failed to turn it around, so moves were put in place to stay in the Premier. Roy falling ill, nobody wanted that, it’s just unfortunate.

I did think saying that he wasn’t worried about relegation in the Monday night interview was like waving a red rag at a bull!
I know context is everything but I am sure the Directors and Shareholders are definitely worried about relegation!

Roy Is hardly going to say no I dont think we can stay up. As leader of the team he has to instill confidence no matter how bad things get. If the players/fans/owners dont see a bullish and confident manager he'll be instantly out of a job.
Privately Roy is not an idiot. He and Ray can see the club was beginning to freefall results wise. He's the one person that doesn't have the luxury of being able to say so though.

I, along with many others thought "Where is the right-back and left-winger? And another goalie expecting to be the first choice"

Better purchases in the summer and an average amount of injuries and we could have been looking at top-8. Both scenarios going tits-up and we are facing a relegation battle

Adding to this I am sure that had Roy expressed personal concerns over his health he would have been listened to and a mutual agreement been reached. I really hope he has a speedy recovery but I would imagine that much of the reason he has stuck it out is less to do with being a Palace fan and more to do with the £120,000 he will earn for each game.

Parish damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

It's not as if Parish cast Roy down with Illness and then whilst Roy's helpless on the floor said " and you're fired for good measure".

You have zero facts as to what's happened but let's not delude ourselves with saying it wasn't expected. Roy hasn't done great as of late and if there is a moment to replace him, then now seems like an opportune moment.

I doubt the idea was to try and kill him off at the same time.

Not to mention he's been in a high pressured job on his own volition at the age of 76. Nobody put a gun to his head.

I strongly disagree with that. Roy is not a greedy man and doesn't need the money. If we were talking about Sam Alardyce I'd tend to agree but Roy wasn't staying for the money.
I'd imagine the biggest motivator was pride and an unshakable self belief that he could turn things around once the key players returned from injury. Maybe he was right. We'll never know.
I dont imagine we'l see Roy Hodgson in a dugout again which is a little sad but all things must come to an end.

It's a lovely thought, but he's a man motivated by pride who also thought to negotiate a £4.5m pay deal before committing a signature to his contract. The opportunity to manage your boyhood club (again) will have been a factor but enhanced by fantastic remuneration.
I agree we won't see him again in the dugout and we'd all liked to have bid farewell in 9th position after the Villa game but it was clear well before Christmas that was not going to happen.
Nobody's choice of ending, but a negotiated exit some weeks ago would have been preferable. Hindsight and all that.

There were a few threads earlier this week regarding ‘Longball’ in the modern game.

I’m no tactical genius but anyone who says it won’t work in the modern game… take a look at Liverpools opener ironically against Brentford today. Genius finish too.
