A recurring mention on this and other related threads is that people seem to think that after the current list of tough fixtures is completed things will get easier when we enter a new phase of 'winnable' matches. I think this is deluded optimism. What makes one think that games with teams below us will be a good source of relegation-saving points? I disagree because of our lack of goals and even more our lack of chances created. I do not have much faith in Mateta, Edouard and Ayew but if they don't get the service it's hard to pin the blame on them. The manager keeps on about 'not taking our chances' but his team selection and often nonsensical subs is not helping. I thought the introduction of two new, young midfielders would help to rectify this problem but his negative outlook mitigates against them. Persevering with Schlupp and Mateta is becoming laughable. Ayew has his moments but he is a proven non-scoring No.9. The teams presently below us seem to be enjoying a renaissance and I fear we will in the thick of the relegation struggle come the end of March if PV doesn't become more pro-active instead of his current re-active default. My only positive is the hope that the return of Zaha (our talisman) will turn the tables for us.

I don't think the fixtures against teams below us are bankers, but over the last few years our points per game involving teams below is pretty high and we haven't lost many. If you look at our games against teams currently below us this season we have played 8, won 5, drawn 1, lost 2 (a 63% win percentage). That's not to say we'll see the same pattern, but it highlights while some of us are a bit more optimistic than others.

Not really the only team below us who you would say are in a false position is Leicester, the rest are pretty poor and all struggle to score goals, Everton have lost Gordon who was by far their best player tho dyche will see them up, still dont see Southampton and Bournemouth picking up enough points. West ham have to deal with a pointless European competition. I'd favour us against any team in the bottom half.

The 49 points season we went to the arse needing a point. It was my birthday. We lost 3-0. I was in the arse part of the clock end with about 2000 other palace. I can remember going for p*** at HT and ducking under the yellow police tape that separated Palace from the arse fans. I was in a palace shirt and had my coat undone. A lady copper said woo, woo where do you think you are going? I'm going to the bog says I. I looked at the arse fans and said you wont do nothing will you lads? They all shock their heads. In the bog I had plenty of room as I think they were playing spot the looney! I’ve got a little story about that day as well, I was looking after two youngsters and the whole game this larey palace fan was bumping and barging against them as we were close to the fence separating us from the Arsenal fans and he was mouthing off to them constantly. As we walked depressed out of the ground after we see the larey palace fan laying on the floor with blood all over his face.

So you think it is not Vieira that picks Schlupp for a midfield spot in every game? He has some culpability and I share your frustration about Schlupp's continual selection whilst the game passes him by. But there seems to be a general consensus that our full backs, forwards and midfield aren't good enough. That's a lot of players. Edited by Rachid Rachid Rachid (19 Feb 2023 3.28pm)

I’m going to predict the bottom half of table however hard that is , Leicester been battered today which is good hopefully same will happen to spam later 11th Villa I’ve added Wolves to the bottom 3 but I’m interested to see there reaction after getting beat yesterday ,

My predictions, null and void, if PV goes There’s just not a chance he’ll go , the money it would cost to sack would be outrageous plus as I keep saying we are still 1 point better off at this stage after 23 games than last season, I do understand everyone’s worries but we will be ok but will need a very strong summer transfer window to not go down next season

All fair and valid points, but I would suggest Vieira is equally culpable. A good manager would realise he has not been given the full player resources to implement a complete transformation to possession based football and modify their strategy to suit the players they do have. Instead it seems PV has blithely carried on regardless as if he has a squad like Man City. Unless he at least temporarily abandons his idealistic plans and adopts a more pragmatic way to see out the season there could well be trouble ahead I didn't go to the game yesterday so can't comment but by all accounts we were seconds away from a very important, confidence boosting win. Against Brighton last week we started out playing 442 and a more direct game but we didn't have the players to hold the ball and get us playing in Brighton's half. Mateta was pretty useless but I thought Edouard was worse when he came on and appeared to be a fully signed up graduate of the Benteke school of laziness. In my opinion, Viera has neither been given the personnel options to attack direct or defend deep. However, it's a results business and I'd agree that the point may come where a change will be needed to shake things up. Our record over the last dozen or so games is terrible and confidence will have been eroded. The idea that the games will become easier is fanciful in my opinion.

But if we don't start rebuilding in the summer window we'll be toast next season. Many blame SP, but he's always said that he'll only pass the reins onto someone who cares about the club and cam move it forward. Harris & Blitzer are wealthy enough, but not interested in Palace. Textor is not wealthy enough and I'm not convinced that he has Palace's best interests at heart either. He's an investor and they want a return on their investments. Until this mess is resolved we'll be in limbo. I'm just hoping that as 'investors' Harris, Blitzer & Textor will protect their investment and free up the funds needed to start rebuilding in the summer. We can't wait for the Academy to come good, we need PL worthy reinforcements now.
