To get us to another final and be in with a chance of winning it, I’d imagine. Every team has moments of luck, particularly in knockout football where games are decided on such small margins. Margins like bringing on two subs who combine to score a last minute winner. He is now by a considerable distance our most successful tournament manager - he is consistently and regularly taking us to the latter stages of tournaments; I find it very hard to agree that this is happening without him having a plan or, as others often suggest, any idea what he’s doing as a manager. It is my view that we've won despite GS, not because of him. His stats are impressive and his record undeniable... "you can only beat what's put in front of you" etc etc. but he's an old school man working with new school players. But we're in the final against the best team in the tournament. a one off match, anything can happen. For once we do not go in as favourties. They are beatable and should allow us opportunities. I hope that win or lose, we put in a good performance, without screaming at GS's inaction. thats all really what I want.

Fair enough - I can’t imagine any other scenario where a manager brings on two subs who directly go and win us the game and the conclusion is that we won in spite of him. Given the early performance issues in the tournament, he’s made good changes and solved problems game by game - we’ve changed systems completely and look a much better team as a result. His substitutions throughout the tournament have nearly always been impactful. Frankly I couldn’t give a toss how we play on Sunday, as long as we lift the trophy. The funny thing is even if we do that, there will still be people claiming he’s a terrible manager.

I want fun football too and this data bashing has made the game a dull watch. But Argentina, Germany and Italy have cabinets full of silver and multiple stars on their shirts that they have eternity to gloat about and none of them achieved that with the "best" football. Italy - defend defend defend Argentina - cheat cheat cheat Germany - dreary automaton efficiency I say this again, if we win no-one is going to care how by the time the hangovers wear off. My only regret is I am now in some semi rural location and want to be in a big city if we win storming up the street in a state of advanced refreshment hurling abuse at passers by with impunity.

Really!? Even after the last couple of performances? Don’t get me wrong, Wharton is a world class prospect, but so is Mainoo - I think it’s pretty much impossible to criticise his selection given how he’s played and how he’s improved the team. Its not really my view or yours the poster was talking about but Wharton's. He is a sportsman thus uber competitive and I understand they tend not to want to occupy a seat on the fringe.

You can still do that ST, you don't need others. Will give local people something to talk about at least.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

That was the first time he's done that in a game that 'mattered'. and tbf I gave him credit for that. "he’s made good changes and solved problems game by game" .. cant think of any examples. replacing TAA with gallagher? didn't solve anything. and he is a Terrible manager, with Players good enough to get through the games playing in his terrible 'patient' style. I think a lot of people think that, let’s face it the ordinary Jo on the street could manage the England team with the quality of players we’ve got, the lack of quality of some of the nations we play until the latter stages of tournaments and still get results.
