We can agree on that in hindsight. The Australians did not pursue that policy and I expect this is a decision that repeatedly comes back to haunt them. I have read nothing about what likely informed Wilson's decision but I expect it may have been motivated by economics and pay back for Eisenhower shafting us on Suez. That said, we have spent the following decades kowtowing to our big brother to get back into his good books. History will judge us on that. The USA could not argue that Britain was not doing its bit, as we had our own Vietnam war, in Borneo against the Communist Indonesian dictator Sokarno, using 50,000 men we could say that we were already overstretched. The tactics employed, of jungle warfare and SAS units, were highly successful and totally different to the failure of mass bombing in Vietnam by the Americans. Only 114 men lost and 180 wounded in four years 'the most successful war we have probably ever had' - Dennis Healey.

Edited by steeleye20 (03 Nov 2023 3.25pm) Edited by steeleye20 (03 Nov 2023 3.38pm) The 2 campaigns are hardly comparable. And we were done and dusted with it in 1966.

If they were attacked from all four sides then they would need to defend all four sides. It makes no difference to the need to use a proportionate response to each attack and to minimise civilian casualties. They do not appear to be doing either. They appear to be making things worse. I heard a former US government military advisor, who had a lot of sympathy for Israel, question the strategy today. He suggested that a more effective response would be a slower, more forensic and carefully targeted one, with most of the army withdrawn to the borders, air strikes limited to carefully selected targets and fast in and out raids mounted to eliminate communications, commanders and supplies. That would certainly command more international support.

The Palestinians outnumber Hamas maybe by a factor in hundreds. They voted them in all them years ago. They should be thanking Israel for voting them out. As for the pro Hamas marches going on around the globe. These f***wits actually think they are pro Palestine, really; they actually believe that. Well let’s hope that they are all ready for when the fifth legion get their instruction cos if you western or white your getting it.

Personally, I don't think Britain should have any more interest in what happens in Palestine than does India. What is happening there is a tragedy whoever is dying. However, watching the elites deal with it you realise just how fecked up this world is. Edited by Stirlingsays (04 Nov 2023 7.51am)

I've managed to stockpile quite a few barrels of gunpowder. I just need a some form of transport to get them from East Sussex powder mills to central London, for tomorrow. Who's with me ?
I disengage, I turn the page. |
