Simple point. Why lock down a nation when you can just politely ask for those who need to be protected to lock themselves down. This country is fooked plain and simple if we don’t all go back to work. That would at least have been a strategy rather than winging it. I get that initially the situation was less clear and so there is a certain logic to buying time for us all (at a cost) but several countries had much better plans for care homes and the like. Ironically during lockdown here old folks homes were realistically the most dangerous places to be. As for the elderly population in the community, I can't help but feel that the government didn't want to differentiate risk or rules at first on account that the elderly are one of the key voting demographics. Without such concerns a message of 'protect the elderly and keep the economy running' could have taken the edge off the economic hit, and also aligned with the differentiating risks the virus itself presents the old compared to the young.

That’s plausible but my take on this government is that it set out from after the ele ction to please as many people as possible across the political, economic and social spectrum. Covid came soon after and that goal remained, clouded their judgement over doing what was the right thing in their minds or analysis but instead did the right thing in the eyes of lots of people or the media. A real shower. By late May it was clear lockdown could’ve been released. It wouldn’t have made the slightest bit of difference to this blip, wave or rumble of cases they’ve hunted down in hotspots. They could’ve kept social distancing and hygiene but all this lot are good for is one order to like stay in, don’t go out, wear a mask, don’t kill granny. What an embarrassment. Keira wouldn’t be any better. He’d just find more misleading positive test numbers to make the picture worse.

Still none the wiser on these horrific levels of long Covid that’s meant to be highly damaging long term. From 30% to 80%. Sorry, can’t take the seriousness of it with that wild range of guess work. If it was genuinely so common they’d be able to say. It is completely understandable the young are pissed (off). Futures getting ruined more and more by the self interested and delicate Diana generations. The one good thing about social media is when they’re moaning about unemployment or grim life in the future, their wishes are pages away on screen.

The trouble with anything new, especially where it packs a punch, is that it takes a while for reliable data to emerge and for us to understand the impact and road to recovery over time. The most sensible approach I suppose is not to accept that the worse case scenario is the most likely eventual outcome, while also not imagining that we somehow already know that the impact on health will be insignificant over time.

Knowhere have I seen any stats on the ethnicity of the deaths. Reading between the lines BAME are 3 times more likely to die if they contract C19.

Well that sounds sensible. But this long Covid is causing the cowardly hysterical bunch to lose their s*** again and not want to do anything. This includes young people you know are going to struggle finding work etc etc. Furlough needs to stop and stay stopped. Not end of October. Should’ve been end of April.

I don't agree with end of April but the end of October was a ridiculous policy ( three months too long) and has just given shed loads of people the right to do **** all for months whilst pretending to work from home - that doesn't detract from those who genuinely have done so by the way - and it has also given some Employers the chance to rook the system - I hope they get punished and go bust by the way!

What of all the office workers, civil servants, urged by Johnson to return to work only a few days ago?

They should make every effort to return to work if that is where they need to be and assuming that reasonable distancing can be provided.

Probably been getting tested without any symptoms so they can get weeks off work with private sector workers of big companies who don’t like their jobs. Oh their kids schools or years get closed down as well.

At which part of the curve in their ‘flatten the curve’ or ‘save the nhs’ from being overwhelmed would you have stopped lockdown/furlough? Just curious, not looking for an argument. We clearly agree this is nuts but it was ‘just this, just that, just for this long’, but I do remember murmurings of end of the year/November and that’s exactly what it’ll be, or longer.
