There has to be a contract between the voters and their representatives otherwise we might as well abolish voting. I am not talking about the little stuff but if an MP switches party then his constituents are entitled to their say. We don't vote for a party. We vote for a person. They don't represent the members of a party. They represent us all. The voters and their MP do have a contract. We expect them to represent us all. So I believe we must leave it up to the conscience of the MP to decide whether they stand down should they change their affiliation mid term. If they have undergone such a complete transformation of approach that they feel unable to honestly represent the people, then their conscience should demand they stand down. If they feel their approach is consistent, but the party they have been affiliated with has moved away from them, then they ought not. In my own dealings with our local MP we never discuss party politics. She has no idea if I voted for her, or not. The matter we are discussing goes straight to Johnson's lies and other failures. He was her leader, but she has represented my interests without hesitation, just as I expect an MP should do. She has won my respect and thanks. This is the way it is supposed to work.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

It isn't though just an opinion. It's the only logical conclusion of the system we use. Unless and until we write a constitution which mandates our MPs to vote according to the will of their constituents and, importantly, specifies how that will is to be measured, then they have no other option other than to make their determinations themselves, using their conscience. You can argue for such a change but I fail to see how it could possibly work in the UK, let alone be better. So I don't think it's in any way outdated. I think it's use is grossly misunderstood and misrepresented. The practice you're endorsing is based on Burke's theory.

If someone wishes to keep the information private, I have no trouble with that, my friend. If they wished to share, I might be interested in the response and, in this case definitely interested. Further to this, I feel that my salary is private and I have no wish to share that information with you. There, you see? Easy. It seems blindingly obvious that Willo wishes to keep this information private. Easy

They can only blame the previous hmg for so long!

They will just tell the BoE to print money for the financial sector. Just as Sunak is going to do. That's what all of them will up until it won't work anymore.
