This is from the New York Times. It points to lax regulation by governments of both Labour and Conservative at both the national and local levels as well as a fundamental misunderstanding of fire prevention in tall buildings. Therefore, we are not only talking about relatively smaller buildings like Grenfell Towers but also ones the size of Canary Wharf.

I find it almost impossible to understand that the UK does not require the robust use of sprinklers and standpipes in tall buildings. A fire brigade can't haul ladders the size required for these buildings unless they want vehicles than can move no faster than 10 mph while negotiating streets that are half the width of those in New York. In this day and age a major on-site supply of water, which standpipes provide, is crucial to extinguishing fires in tower type buildings.

Labour's John McDonnell has claimed victims of the Grenfell Tower fire were "murdered" by "political decisions" in an interview at Glastonbury. As Camden Council is Labour controlled, does this signal yet another split in the People's Party? As he is calling it 'murder', this of course means that the Camden Comrades were premeditated in thier plot to kill their council tenants.

Grenfell Tower was in Kensington & Chelsea, not Camden. As for John McDonnell, his kind of political posturing does nothing for the victims or the people who have to deal with these disasters, the first responders. It does nothing to explain why successive local and national governments followed fire prevention policies that are not reflective of state of the art technology or anything close to that. It also shows that no one learned anything from the Camberwell fire several years ago and I sincerely doubt the lessons of the Valley Parade fire have been fully taken on board other than wooden structures burn quickly. How many people know the best way to evacuate Selhurst Park from their seat? While the New York fire code is far more stringent than anything in the UK, it is an exception rather than the rule in the US. Having said that, if there were a disaster at one of our major sporting venues I'm couldn't guarantee that they could be evacuated without a significant loss of life. It is also reported quite frequently that tall buildings are often built with serious fire safety deficiencies and some of those who are supposed to enforce the laws are on the take.

Is it any wonder that many people are sick and tired of "professional" politicians of any stripe and are turning increasingly to people with little to no experience in running a government but say the things people want to hear? If you think I'm talking about the current occupant of the most chaotic White House administration in history, you would be correct.

What does Camden Council have to do with the Grenfell fire, in (Tory controlled) Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council?

OK, obviously got that wrong, but Camden Council evacuated people in the middle of the night because of their premeditated murderous cladding? The point surely is that McDonnell is being idiotic talking about 'murder'.

Funny enough, a close friend of mine has been brought in to run the forensic recovery of all the victims from the building.

And you think your job is grim!
