I think the decision is quite easy, if Roy’s keen and nobody better is available keep Roy for another year. Listen to the players talk about Roy and the culture and freedom to express themselves it sounds like a very happy camp from older players like Wardy ro younger ones like Eze. It gives us another season of stability (maybe Roy will even take the hand break off for a season which would surely be his last lol), another season of development for our good youngsters whether that be on loan or in the 25 as I can’t see any of them are quite ready to break into the match day squad. Then hand over to someone younger next season.

Also Paddy is there to develop as a first team coach and will be an easy link to the academy and youngsters. Squad wise we really just need a striker I would spend whatever money with have getting one in. For what it’s worth I like Gyokeres, holds it up, runs the channels and got a goal in him. I feel like even if he doesn’t score 10 goals he will be an asset to the team and bring other forward players into the game. This is the problem with our current strikers they do none of these 3 things. We need a right back and a replacement for Wilf but maybe can cope for a season without either or use the loan market again for a season)

With regards to this season the teams coming up are weaker than last season so we shouldn’t be relegated, with one or two decent signings and not losing anyone we may be able to kick on a little. However for me, while £100 million is apparently ring fenced for the new stand, staying 12-15 and not being in relegation stress in the last 3 games is ok. Listen to Parish it’s pretty much what he always says. Moving forward I think he’ll get the new stand built, sell a gem or two from the academy or first team for a decent profit and sell up with legacy in tact and a few quid for his troubles. Then maybe we can attempt this next level with a bigger match day income and effective academy producing the occasional first team player every 1/2 years. Or selling to the football league at a healthy profit circa O’brien at the moment.

Up the palace!

I fear you’ve put more thought and effort into this post Georgey than the annual sum of my own!

The end result is a very sensible bit of commentary and I commend you.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Yes, a long but refreshing change from the standard divorced from reality posts demanding Parish get his cheque book out, 11 seasons in the top flight and why are we not pushing on, we completely lack ambition and so on and so on [repeat to fade]...

We should be getting someone in that can do better than Hodgson. There is plenty out there. We should be challenging top 8 at least by now. The fact we have made no league progress is embarrassing. The reason I say what I say about parish is he has no ambition or definitely hasn’t proved he had any ambition it is very clear unless your head is buried in the sand which I know some of our fans are.

Why don't you put your money where your never ceasing mouth is and buy 25% of the club?

You're like someone who has a couple of beers in a pub and a acts like he owns it.

Can you not understand we don't have the financial muscle to become a club that will for example challenge for Europe on a regular basis.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

It's only 6 weeks or so until the first game, whether we keep Roy or get someone new, surely that situation and the Zaha situation need to be wrapped up within a week or we're going to be at a huge disadvantage in terms of preparation? It's been over 3 months since we sacked Vieira, I don't get how it's taking this long to line someone up.

None of us do (though some will pretend they do). We can only guess possibilities.

My take on it (for what it's worth) is:
1. The club does not have the finances to buy any meaningful additions to the squad.
2. They don't want to pay silly money to an incoming manager and that manager's purported essential entourage.
3. The managers they have contacted (and I do believe the club have been in contact with some) aren't prepared to take on the challenge without financial backing
4. Hodgson is reluctant to take on the job for a full year but may help out on an interim basis if needed
5. The club are having to widen the net to find someone (like with Vieira) who is prepared to take on the challenge of using the existing squad (minus Zaha) to retain our PL status for another year.

Total conjecture on my part and living up to my pseudonym of Doombear.

Totally agree.
What a complete fiasco with no manager in place with only some did weeks before start of new season.
Rumours abound that many of our players are of great interest to many clubs home and abroad and yet to date,we have achieved one signing and even that was a free transfer.

My take is that Roy has agreed to do another year in the event that the club don’t land anybody else. I posted this on here a few weeks ago.

This theory was also reported in todays Times.

Probably just guesswork on both our parts !

Probably,Roy is one of few people who has the maturity and personality in general to deal with Parish, who many potential applicants have apparently walked away from.

Jeez some of you really don't understand at all do you.
We have limited funds, whilst our owners are wealthy they are not writing blank cheques. We have done amazingly well with both the academy and managing to stay afloat in the prem for the longest time in our history.
Most of our transfer activity will ALWAYS come towards the end of the window because we are waiting on other clubs, deals and players to make their moves, only then will certain players become available or excess to squad requirements.
Of course we are ambitious but we have to be cautious as well and MUST spend wisely. Newcastle are ambitious too but have outrageous financial clout now with their new owners. Not only can they make irresistible offers for other clubs players but they can afford to make a few mistakes along the way.
Keep the faith ... our squad is improving.
