Excellent point. Unfortunately there appears to currently be a momentum heading in the wrong direction - losses to Brighton and Watford should be a wake up call. I don't like to compare to other 'similar' clubs, as circumstance, luck plays into it, but i really feel that out of the brighton's, wolves, watfords, leicester (minus that year) we are trailing. 7 years in the prem and if we get relegated this season, nothing but a huge wage bill to show for it and a massive exodus.

Surely even Roy’s most fervent admirers can’t want another season of home displays like this season?

Whatever the team selection its not managers fault if they don't play with passion. The FA Cup game was case in point, the players know the importance of the FA Cup, but there was no passion against Watford... Can't keep relying on Zaha..

I reckon they train while they are tied together with string.

Hodgson and Trump..... Not a lot in common there. However yes a 72 year old can have a few years left in a career but it’s not age that is the problem for me it’s that Roy is getting found out by certain teams this season and has no answer. You don’t lose 3 times to Watford or twice to Brighton through just bad luck. We are player for player easily superior to both of those sides but come away with 5 losses to those outfits this campaign. For those saying Roy should have gone at the end of last year, they must have missed his words at the last game. Kicking on and not being perennial relegation fodder was the general jist. Quite a speech it was. He was going nowhere at that point. It seems things have run their course but parish flogs dead horses regularly, and he loves an older manager it seems. The only thing that can retire Hodgson, is Hodgson. I totally agree with this... I'm the same as you. When I look at the players we have I find it hard to believe we are in a relegation battle. Look at Wolves... A quality side but are they better than us player for player??... Not a chance... But they have a quality manager who likes playing quality football and can clearly get the best out of his players. This is our sixth season in the Prem... We are spending lots of money on transfers and wages yet every season is the same... A relegation battle.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

This idea of ‘progression’ in the EPL is a myth. Sides like ours don’t ‘progress’. They bob about for a few years if they are lucky and then get relegated. One season’s performance rarely impacts on the following season’s in any material way. Last year Burnley did well; this year they are dire. Watford were tipped for relegation at the start of the season, but now look at them. Next year they will probably struggle, and someone else will enjoy their day in the sun. A few years ago Swansea, Stoke and West Brom were held out as models of success. Teams who had built, who had ‘progressed’. And now look where they are. And have a look too at the league table for the first season we were in the PL this time round. Which of those teams have ‘progressed’? We are one of the few who have not been relegated! Just enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts and don’t worry about ‘progressing ‘. It ain’t gonna happen.

I tend to agree with this although I will say a spending spree from a manager/coach who really understands what the team needs to move forward is likely to give us two or three seasons up at 12th/11th where the pressure eases a little.

It is very difficult when you have clubs sitting at the very top licking their lips every time they spy an exceptional talent. Leicester back up your post.

The voice of reason. Fair to say too many people rush to say, we should be at pushing for the "next level" and then things fall apart and clubs get relegated. But we've gone from dead certainty for relegation to expecting to stay up each season. Isn't that progress? We could list out every season since CPFC2010 took over but that would turn this into a "look how far we've come thread". For me this has been the most lethargic season since we got promoted. The fight and desire just don't seem to be there even though this is arguably the best squad we've had since the early 90's. Home games against Wolves, Watford, Cardiff, Newcastle, Brighton, Southampton simply weren't good enough. They can't all put be put down to just a bad day at the office.
