I agree with the last three points, but if 'anti-austerity is bullsh*t' why did the SNP sweep up against a pro-austerity party in Scotland?

The Scotland vote has little to do with austerity.

It's a rebound f*** after the referendum.

The SNP could have said they would skin alive puppies and then f*** them and still would get the same amount of seats.

The 'anti austerity' message is dead. People know we have to balance books and the AA message is so vague and inaccurate that it lacks credibility.

Sorry to break it to you.

Spot on. The left have a staggering habit of treating the electorate like morons.

Even in defeat, they've blamed the "Murdoch press" as if the British public are too stupid to make up their own minds, and just blindly follow what's on the front of the Sun. The British public aren't stupid, and don't like being talked to like they are. A lot of my Facebook feed is filled with lefties and the result has been greeted with an angry roll of the eyes, as if anyone who disagrees with them 'is too stupid to get it'.

If Labour want to get back in, they have to engage people of both sides. Like them or not, the Tories have done this to a certain extent: raising personal allowance, increased provisions for childcare, legalising gay marriage.

Labour focused on their core and alienated the rest. Big, big error.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Unbelievably depressing. Even as someone who didn't vote, I can appreciate how terrible a Tory/UKIP/DUP coalition would be.

I might have to take up smoking again.

You have no grounds to complain if you did t vote.

Why, do you think my vote could've swayed it?

I don't see how you can argue outcome if you don't participate.

You chose to opt out and then bemoan the result.

I spoiled my ballot paper in a safe seat, which I think is just as actively participant as voting for someone who clearly won't win.

How are you coping with UKIP's failure?

The cop out.

I think its clear that they are the third biggest party now, in terms of support.

4.5m voters. Very impressive. This will mean that the Tories will continue to adopt their policies to keep their supporters and their own happy. It is disappointing the number of seats but as a result of the failure of the voting system.

The losers of this election are the left. I can cope with that

Christ Matt, you're spinning this like a true party liner! I think we all knew that UKIP would overtake the Libs as the third major party, but to only win one seat, regardless of the mitigating factors of our electoral system, and to have your leader resign looking pretty worn out and despondent: secretly, and I doubt you'll admit it, you must have hoped for something more?

The left did take a pounding last night (in England) and I think big questions have to be asked about the approach taken. The case against austerity has to be made in a clearer, more aggressive way as it has been in Scotland. Labour have to take a longer term approach to winning over debate, rather than immediately cowing in to immigration and economic policy which has alienated a lot of their core vote.

But I'm not going to bother myself with defending Labour, they as a party come nowhere near my ideological position. What really pisses me off is that this freak result allows loads of people on the right to create their own history, as we can see in Pussay Patrol's post. The Tories didn't win this election because they were 'grown up'; Cameron ducked and dodged the public limelight, they rode the wave of economic myths the media presented (go over their 2010 manifesto and see how close they got to reducing the deficit by the amount they wanted) and benefitted massively from Labour's capitulation north of the border.

The left lost. 'Anti Austerity' is bulls***.

The left need to do some thinking as to why they lost.

The right is in the ascendency.

Deal with it.

Then why did every single anti-austerity party make massive gains? The Greens increased their vote by about 400%, the SNP cleared up in Scotland, Plaid added to their share of the votes in Wales. Even Tusc got 36000 votes in their first ever election!

Like I say, I can admit the left lost this election, but it's the fictitious history creation which the right are attempting that really pisses me off.

Seeing as certain seats were won with as small a margin as 45 votes...quite easily

I'm also impressed by lefties who manage to talk up the Greens (share of the vote) but think UKIP did badly (number of seats).

The people that voted for 'credible' TUSC, would have voted in the past for Respect, the Communists, SWP, Left Unity, etc. The only reason that TUSC got 36,000 votes I their first election is because those 36,000 votes were previously going to the left parties that were there previously. This isn't a gain for the left. It is the left receiving the same votes as previously under a new guise.

I repeat. The Scotland vote is a rebound from th referendum. It has nothing to do with Austerity. The same with Plaid Cymru, they will have their core support that won't change. The Greens maybe latched onto the Austerity vote but when you talk to a lot of Green supporters, they are more motivated by ecological issues than the communist leaning of its leadership. I believe that most Green's vote for the part because of the environment, not 'anti austerity'. If they were solely motivated by 'anti austerity', then they would vote 'credible' TUSC.

The right aren't rewriting history. You cannot accept that your message has been categorically rejected.

He left have a lot of thinking to do.

Sorry to break it to you.

I think you forget there was a time very recently, such as the last election, when the SNP had 8 seats, and before that when they were a token party.

I don't think they're an anti-austerity vote, more than Labour spent the last two or three general elections chasing UK votes and the SNP filled the void of a left wing party in Scotland.

The message of Scotland seems to be both for the Union and the SNP. They took 56 out of 59 seats in Scotland and previously only averaged 6 since the General Election of 1997, when Tony Blair came to power.

I think its very telling that the rise of the SNP is so closely linked to the rise of New Labour, and its demise.

They took 50% of the Scottish vote last night.
