True, but reports from the time say the spanish flu 2nd wave was more deadly than the initial one. You're doing right by yourself and your family as far as I can see Cryst. People elevate Sweden as a shining example, but their economy has been marginally less impacted than Germany. Plus they have more single occupancy households than just about anywhere on the planet and so all of these aspects factor in to the spread. It's a global issue. There is no magical escape hatch and every country was 'winging it' with an unknown outcome. After the fact commentary counts for little. The lockdown clearly did bring down the numbers so that's a positive. Does it outweigh the economic damage done during those months? That's an unknown because we were and are still feeling out the behaviour of the virus. July has been a very active months in retail, more so than this time last year in fact, so maybe it was the right balance. I'm humble enough to say I don't know and really hope that we can carry on as we have been of late. You should endevour to look after yourself and your family and to be as cautious as you feel is necessary based on your particular cirumstances.

That would make for interesting policy for our currently locked down areas of the country where the infection has always been high. Very predictably so. Edited by Stirlingsays (12 Aug 2020 10.59am)

One of the outcomes of covid19 is surely that any statement or figure from government is just basically nonsense to be disregarded. Look after yourself, be responsible over health matters and hope that you will get through ok. Although the next financial pandemic package from the tories could well include a £3 voucher for Tesco online. Our world-beating response is undeniable.

It would be the same whoever was in charge. Apart from Layla Moran who’d destroy us financially. You can’t hold people’s hands all the time.

The people recording these deaths as Covid knew what they were doing and had an agenda, plus death from Covid requires no post mortem. So far in here we've had, masks are dangerous because of something something bacteria, the numbers were coming down prior to lockdown and so lockdown didn't cut cases or deaths at all, and when a vaccine comes out it's a secret government plot to chip the entire population. Now of course, there's a government conspiracy - i mean what else could it be - to lie about the numbers. Whatever system of recording used would miscatogorise many because there is no perfect cut off point. I'm sure those whose family members were hospitalised with covid and have remained there in agonising limbo for a month plus have misgivings about the fact that when those family members now die in hospital it will no longer be classed as a covid-19 death. Whichever way you move the thresholds some people are miscategorised is my point. As with most countries if you compare the deaths with years prior you get a sensible idea of what is going on numbers-wise, especially when you do so across multiple countries. For all their faults the government are just doing their best in an unrepresented situation where the outcomes at every stage were and are not fully known. Whatever decisions they made would be declared the wrong one because it would be far more damaging than the status quo. What might seem like a good move one month might turn out to be a bad one the next. We were all flying blind so any 'told you so' comes after the fact, so isn't particularly useful. We've opened back up for the most part and the kids are soon back at school. I've had a few pints out - am happy that I'm able to - and things are gearing back up with those who feel more at risk keeping out of the way as is their right. It's a tough time for everyone, and its better to try to move forward with others and be more positive and supportive in tough times rather than the alternative. It is what it is, we are where we are.

The R rate did start falling before lockdown, the government have even said so. Doctors, nurses and families of the bereaved have said deaths are being recorded as Covid when they aren’t. When the total deaths of this year and recent years of countries are compared we’ll see more speechless reactions before they clutch at another ‘What if it’ response. We have been restricting everybody to protect people that could’ve been protected by everybody while we prevented this economic and health and other death fallout. But we didn’t because of Neil Ferguson, the media, Piers Morgan and the morons who watch him on itv. The DIY cloth masks are problematic in a number of ways and a vaccine needs to be safe for everyone to want to take it. I always maintain good hygiene and keep a distance from people until they don’t from me. No conspiracy theories thanks pal.
