No, I wouldn't accept shooting people but nor would I attempt to scale a wall with that deterrent in place.

A deterrent that isn’t used doesn’t deter.

That's the nuclear weapons argument settled then.

Having left the UK in 2007 after watching palace games from the 1960’s (on my neighbors shoulders in the holmesdale) I do try to be open minded to the comments about Roy, Steve and the team because my interactions are now from afar! Although I have seen every PL minute (they don’t show the FA cup in the US unless you pay extra).

Now having spent many many days in places such as El Paso, Del Rio, midland and Austin, I have seen first hand the devastation to these towns that now resemble Beirut or Sana (yes I’ve been to both cities as well) that 10,000,000 border crossings have caused.

I am thankful to governor Abbott for highlighting this catastrophe and spreading the pain so even the right wing media have struggled to sweep this one under the carpet!

I’m not sure when one says enough is enough?

Surely the scale of the problem of illegal immigration is hardly under the carpet. It is front page here often enough so must be in everyone’s mind in the USA. I cannot imagine anyone being in favour. Including every politician who knows that it is a certain vote loser.

So the problem is not if there is a desire to bring it under control but how to do it. Wanting something and achieving it are two very different things. Saying enough is enough, is not enough. That’s the easy bit.

Making wild undeliverable promises are the politicians stock in trade during election campaigns. Something Trump has elevated to new levels in recent years. You can anticipate him promising to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of him becoming President again, creating peace in Israel a day later and signing contracts to finish the “wall” within the first hour.

That many believe him is the real issue here. That can probably be seen more clearly from a distance than from the middle of chaos.

A somewhat different proposition. Assured mutual destruction is the deterrent not the means of achieving it.

We have yet to see the use of low yield tactical nuclear weapons, but they surely will be somewhere sometime.

Still a deterrent that hasn't been used. If you have a vicious dog it'll deter burglars whether it bites anyone or not.

The rhetoric from the media / social platforms truly drive the thinking of the average American! So what I believe is reality is nothing like my neighbors all because we watch different versions of the truth! (Or lies)

I can guarantee you if residents in NY, Chicago and Philadelphia etc choose to listen to left wing media they would not have a care in the world about illegals until the problem reached their doorstep!

Now that cat is truly out the proverbial bag and multiple other political issues! Joe will double down on his Trump is a threat to democracy strategy and label his 70 million voters deranged!

It will be a long year of media spin and I guess who has the most money will win! This is America after all!

And…. If he did these things would your opinion change? Exactly, more word salad to have a pop at the future POTUS.

Not actually true. The bombs that ended WW2 were nuclear. The idea of that happening to you if you did it to them is the deterrent.

Not every burglar will be put off by a vicious dog. If they have a gun and are prepared to use it then why be deterred? Unless a border guard with a machine gun is known to be capable of using it they would not deter too many. In East Germany they didn’t hesitate. I don’t believe the USA would ever use such tactics, even if some of the MAGA crowd would want to.

You are fantasising. There is no such thing as a “looney left” meltdown. That’s the kind of rhetoric that Alf Garnett would have spouted at his son in law. The possibility of another bout of Trump concerns everyone who values democracy. There is a genuine worry that he would emasculate the State Department and make it loyal only to him and then become an effective dictator. He admires the position and power of Putin and would like to emulate it. This would of course be resisted and chaos result.

Who do you regard as “left wing” media because from here I don’t see any in the USA. I see plenty of right wing media and some normal, middle of the road outlets trying to maintain balance.

Trump is a threat to democracy. You don’t need any media to realise that. Trump manages that all by himself with what he says and does.

Some of his most passionate supporters really must be deranged but others aren’t. They are just misinformed by the media they watch and willing to overlook Trump’s obvious failings.

That politics in the USA depends on money is true, is sickening and proves it is not fit for purpose.
