The Swiss game was an improvement but still only a 6/10. We'll need to step up again to beat the Dutch who have some quality players. They've been reliant on big moments from big players and have ridden their luck so far. It will be another tough watch with lots of huff and puff with no obvious game plan or structure. This tournament, much like the last three, we've been blessed with avoiding the strong teams. Whenever we do face them we've always come up short. I predict the same here. The return of Shaw bringing some balance to the team is reason for optimism, however I cannot see how he can possibly be match sharp for such a big fixture. My Dutch mate also thinks they're crap, so I guess the Dutch fans are no different from us. Anyway, hope I'm wrong. Would be a shame for this squad to come up short again. It'll be interesting to see if the return of Guehi means that GS goes back to the old 433/451 formation of the Groups. I say interesting, I mean depressing Edited by CrazyBadger (09 Jul 2024 11.00am)

My understanding is that the FA's main goal for any England manager is to reach the semi finals of major competitions. A reasonable expectation. Southgate has achieved this and is probably leaving after the competition so he has nothing left to prove. So why not say "sod it lads, let's go for it." I wont hold my breath, he is as stubborn as Roy.

Tonight's semi a much better game of football than any we have seen in the Euros so far. Spain leading 2-1 with 10 minutes to go helped by a cracking goal from 16 yr old Lamine Yamal. Fabulous.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

That kid reminds me so much of Olise .Stop him coming inside and he is just a very good player instead of a brilliant one . Im sure Marc will have him sussed in the Final Good game though but France were poor , Mbappe again fails to deliver on the big stage ,it can't be a coincidence that he keeps having off days when it counts most. Just not a big game player , I think he will struggle at Madrid .

Apart from his hat trick in the World Cup Final. Took the words out of my mouth. Mbappe carried France in that final. And if it wasn't for a completely corrupt FIFA handing the cup to Messi on a plate, he'd have won it for them.

Spain are incredible with the ball and so good to watch - easily the best team in the tournament. The freedom of the two wide men is like the Zaha/Bolasie days at Selhurst. They do play very open and concede a lot of chances though, particularly from crosses and set pieces - France should have scored at least one more yesterday. If we are lucky enough to reach the final, I’d rather play a beautiful side with some vulnerabilities than the French machine.

Getting past Holland will be a challenge but if we do and our goal threat can be realised we should be able to match them.

I think I am aligned with you. Will be interesting vs the Dutch tonight. We are still yet to meet a real top team so will we stick with our rigid game plan or will we be forced to 'play' and what will that look like?
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

It could be proved disastrously wrong tonight but I feel like both Holland & Spain are good matches for us, at least in theory! It's obviously dependent on us executing a game plan and performing well, which is far from guaranteed given how we've played so far, but in theory I like the match ups. We will let them dominate possession, we can sit in shape and not concede many chances, and then look to exploit both opposition's defensive frailties as they commit men forward. As I said above, as good as Spain were last night, France probably had the better chances and just needed to be a bit more clinical in the final third to get a result.
