Even if some did vote leave because of EU immigration, it is hardly racist. Europeans are overwhelmingly of the same same race. If you wanted controls on immigration the only possible way of getting them was to vote Leave, even though our hapless governments have done very little to address the problem since Brexit. I know a person who voted leave because he hates the Poles. Your second point is something I heard a lot but nobody has been able to provide a causal connection between Brexit and tighter immigration control of non EU nationals.

There isn’t one but IF and it’s a big if; the UK hmg actually put one together it couldn’t be cattle trucked by the eu I guess.

Are Poles a different race from him? While in the EU, free movement of people meant that we had hardly any means at all of controlling the number of EU citizens coming to this country.

I don't call it racist, but it never ceases to amaze me that there is prejudice by many British against Europeans. Especially the Poles with whom we have had a close bond for a very long time. As you say, they are essentially the same race, and those who came were overwhelmingly grafters, paid into the tax system, and boosted the economy. There were resource issues, of course, but that pressure largely came from non-EU migrants who may have been less able to assimilate. And what is your problem with a lack of control over EU citizens coming? They go to. And they did. Every day they cross soft borders, back and forth within the EU, transferring skills, filling vacancies and chasing the work. They have done this for some time with impunity and no adverse consequences for any of the nations. In fact, quite the opposite as it ensures closer to full employment and addresses inflationary wage spikes (as we are are suffering right now). I feel many, especially older folk, are too emotionally wedded to the physical and philosophical barrier that is the Channel which narrowly separates us from the rest of the Continent. However, younger folk have taken cheap shuttle flights to Paris, or gone under the Chunnel, or taken the brief ferry to Calais and realize the barrier is nothing more than 25 miles of briny water. We are Europeans just like them. Thatcher was and remains a hero of the right. She hated the amount we paid in and what she saw as creeping federalism (both issues she also realized she could address but only while inside the tent). But she was first and foremost a free marketeer. She understood the critical necessity of free movement of goods, services and labour. She did nothing to curb EU migrants. Only the unions and hard left would have done that in order to fend off competition for work and inflate wages. I have heard no good argument on that. "I went into my GP waiting room the other day and half the people there were speaking f*****g Polish" is about as good as it got.

I think it's totally reasonable for the British to complain about immigration being used to keep wages down within their industries....all while they notice the wages in protected industries, for example the financial sector rocket. However, I agree with you on the European point and your history lesson. Problem is that EU leaders aren't interested in Europeans remaining Europeans. It's almost like they want a reduced middle class and a large slave class working for existence, while they live like kings.

I don’t think people are prejudice against Europeans, they just have justifiable concerns about immigration with the strain put on services, resources and existing communities. I don’t think the Channel has anything to do with it, people would still have the same concerns if we were not an island. Thatcher’s concerns were that the EU was evolving into federalism, a concern no doubt shared by everyone who voted Leave. You seem to imply that the EU Single Market is free trade. It is anything but. It is protectionist, price-rigging racket whose main purpose appears to be providing healthy incomes to French farmers while helping to impoverish third-world countries.

Migrants refuse to stay in barge as they are scared of the water. Ok how did you arrive here err by water. I don't get the fuss over this barge it must pass all the safety regulations and from the pictures I have seen it looks no different to a hotel. Time to tell these people this is your accommodation if you don't like it sleep on the streets we never asked you to come here.

It’s big and ugly. I wouldn’t want it in my neighbourhood! The accommodation looks perfectly acceptable though. The problem is more that, very understandably, the local people are concerned about the impact on them. Having them sleep on the streets would make that worse. Also the migrants have been fed all sorts of misinformation by the gangs who traffic them about what they will get here. So they too are often victims. I cannot see a quick solution!

Barge to the front of the queue by getting here illegally then barge while you're awaiting processing seems very fair to me.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

I can quite understand that the locals are concerned. I believe that there is no control over the migrants movements; they can come and go as they please and with potentially 500 young males roaming the area is naturally a cause of worry. I wonder how many will return to the barge at all or just disappear into the night never to be seen again.
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |
